The stock LSD is 25% as you probably know. Seems that most people agree that at 25%, it was hardly worth the extra expense. 50% seems to be a popular number for spirited street driving, and 75% for autocross/track. Anyway, I know Korman can do the upgrade work. Can't help you on the DIY info. In my opinion, rear ends are just about like gearboxes. Unless you are going to set up to do them over & over, it's probably not worth it to do it yourself.
: I am interested in locating a LSD for my 1981 528i. Can anyone explain how to determine what % lock up the unit is (assuming I locate one)?
: If the lock-up is less than 50-75%, can anyone suggest either a shop that can upgrade the differential, or give me ideas on locating instructions / parts to DIY??
: As you might guess, I almost put my "baby" in the ditch over the holidays when ice storm came in and forced me to drive home 200 miles in less than optimum conditions.
: Thanks in adfvance for your help.
