my car did something similar for quite a while until one day she just stopped totally, no clicking no nothing. Turns out it was a (green?) wire that lead to the ignition sw which broke off (maybe from the "jiggle" method). so I attached a push button switch between the broken off wire and the stud on the ignition sw where it used to be attached. I mounted the push button switch in one of the switch blanks on the dash (next to the headlight sw) and now I have a push button starter (of course you have to have the key turned to the "on" position for it to work). Kind of a jury rig, but it works (2+years later) and it looks just fine.
