How do I add mechanical speedo pickup to newer (diff pulse speedo pickup) box?

The E12 M535i car I am restoring has a later dog-leg
box fitted. This unfortunately has a planking plug
where the speedo cable should enter the rear of the
gearbox. Thus the speedo cable is dangling in mid-air
and the speedo doesn't work too well!

Looking at the BMW EPC CDROM it seems that were I to
order an exchange sports 5-speeder from BMW today then
they'd supply the newer box and I'd have to order a
speedo gear assembly and a output shaft flange mod. kit.

My Q(s):

Does anyone know what the output flange mod kit
contains (the speedo gear assembly is pretty self
explanitary)

If I remove the blanking plug should I expect to see the
mechanical speedo drive gear on the newer output shaft?

Has anyone done this mod and can advise?
