After fiddling with the idle adjustment screw, I had a similar problem with my '77 530i. I adjusted my idle screw while the car was cold, then when warmed up a bit, I re-adjusted the idle screw to where I thought was an acceptable idle. If your car still exhibits problems, then you might have a vacume leak somewhere (intake manifold hoses or vacume lines).
