My car has a 5-spd, but I do have an official BMW service manual.
According to it, there is no "filter", there is a metal screen (P/N 24 34 1 209 747) that you remove, clean, and reinstall. The manual says to replace it only if it is "starting to gum up with a brown burnt residue".
Also according to the book, all you need to do is drain the fluid, remove the pan, and remove the screen.
