So I went ahead an bought R134a conversion kit. Hardest thing was getting the conpressor loose and out to drain oil. (I forgot I had put dye- tell in it years ago; needless to say I was pretty shade of red). )-:
Found the leak in the passenge compartment (bad flare fitting - burr on flare put divot in flare gasket).
The results - as this thing has never held freon fo long since converted (it's a euro), the R134 feels like a million bucks. Even sitting in the driveway I can get cold air. It's seems like it still might be slightly under charged - suction line has iced once.
As Rev B. said - it does run higher condensing pressure than R-12. Thus, I replaced the o-rings on the conpressor hoses and used new flare gaskets on the high side. Runs about 230psi in driveway.
Took about 5 hours including trip to Pep Boys for flare gaskets
Dye washed off.
Cost - about $60.00.
