: I was at B&N (Barnes and Noble) yesterday and was looking at this months Grassroots Racing (I think that's the title). I was reading the 5 series article and was absolutely amazed at one of the picutres.
: Right there in full color was Jim Rowe holding a BMW cylinder head over a belt sander. Not sure what he was attempting to do, but it did not make me feel good. A belt sander is not part the tools I use when working on or rebuilding a BMW engines.
: I have heard people who have had bad experiences with MM engines, but others who loved them. Any comments?
oh boy...you just got me started again ;) Talk about a bad experience...mine was absolutely terrible!! (by the way this is absolutely my personal opinion, and is in no way to be considered advice, or professional knowhow) Well here's my story, and some thought to follow. I bought one of them things (loosely termed an engine by MM) three years ago. It blew after 50 miles. $500 later in phone calls, shipping charges, and gaskets they sent me another. That blew in 30000. That's a 600 fold improvement, so i shouldn't complain. The "engine" was rated at 150 horses..hah..what a joke. It couldn't outpull a stock. Since then I have talked with many people (BMW shops, and owners alike) I'd say about 10% are happy, 10% are neutral, and the rest hate MM. By the way shops fall into the latter 80%. Most people have the same troubles i had. absolute unreliability, and lack of advertised power. I've heard of one guy who drove to MM, from San Francisco bay area twice to have them install an engine. I've heard of people in the process opf litigation, and the list goes on...Now again this is my personal opinion so anyone interested in their engine should not believe me, but ask around.
Since I first bought the piece of garbage i have been talking about, i have been thinking. Now the cylinderhead is a delicate piece of hardware. Why would you cut grooves in it? Additionally all the so called modifications are irreversible!! the cylinderhead is permanently scarred, the block is overbored and can not be used with stock high compression pistons. And if their methods are so revolutionary, why is it that no one, and i mean no one uses it??
