New style heads are fiiled in with three small holes around the clyanders.
Now, reality. The old style heads work just fine. You simply CANNOT overheat them. If you are on a budget and can't afford a new or used head, and the old one is not cracked or warped, you can still use it. You just have to be VERY certain that your cooling system is in good shape.
If $$$ are not a problem, get a new style head. The new heads appeared in 1981.
BTW, smoking on deceleration is valve seals.
