In addition to other advice offered, check the ground strap, usually a short braided cable, that runs from the battery to the ground block just in front of the left wheel well. They often decay in a "stealthy" manner and in my experience, the temp. guage is the first place it shows.
If the strap starts to break up when you squeeze it with your fingers, it's history. You can replace it with the stock part or you can get a Ford starter solenoid cable from any auto parts store and run it from the engine ground point back to the block where the ground strap is supposed to attach. It will last a very long time.
