Removing EGR System on '76 530i?

My EGR system has some rotted pipes down near the filter.
I am wondering is there a way to remove the system totally.
I am aware of the whole ethical dillemma of removing emmissions
equipment, but I live in rural Illinois where most cars
have never seen an exhaust system. So hey, who am I hurting.
Seriously, my concern is what effect will this have on
engine stability and performance?
