Re: Crash/impact sensor location

Try just above or to the left of the glove compartment, but accessible. But I believe it's a rollover sensor, not crash, and only operates in the event of it being on it's roof.

Re: VIN Plate and Rust Repair

Is it then the one that's about 2" X 3" and held on by what appear to be pop rivets? Kind of black and silver with the VIN stamped in? In that case I'd just drill out the pop rivets and rivet it on the new part.

Re: VIN Plate and Rust Repair

The one that's stamped in the sheet metal? If you're in that far I'd cut it out and weld it into the new part. Easy compared to the rest of it. And it doesn't sound like there's any deception involved. I have heard of that being done to change VINs, which is not ok IMO, but you're keeping the same n...

Re: Early e12 seat rails - similar chassis to..?

Are sure both sides are the early style? My '79 had the later style on the drivers side and the early style on the passenger side. Regardless, and it's been a while, it seems like the seats were the same, mounting wise, just that the drivers side had the separate removable base allowing tilting of t...

Re: Heater fan inop

It's a pain in the ass to take apart the console at all. So start by checking for voltage and ground, which should change, at the motor wires themselves. Usually they die by wear and rattle and squeal, but I've seen them die silent deaths too and just not work.

Re: Fuel/air mixture adjustments

Thanks Mike, I've looked at that and see it's exactly in the range when idling. But my understanding is the ECU only understands start up, idle, wide open throttle and adds fuel in relation to throttle opening. Isn't there a need to compensate for less potent fuel (compared to the late 70's) and fr...

Re: Brakes and calipers

You can't go to a significantly larger rotor with the stock calipers. Nothing else besides E12 (well, E3 also, but E12s have bigger brakes) fits E12s. Drill on down in Realoem to see what came on what. Likely your best and easiest upgrade will be to find brakes off a later E12 that are 280X22 front ...

Re: Fuel/air mixture adjustments

There is a remarkably good tool that came with the car for measuring this exact thing. The Oxygen sensor. If all is well, once warmed up just a little bit, it will show an output, measured while in line and connected, of about a half a volt, bouncing up and down constantly. Technically an average of...

Re: Diffs again....

You would lose a bit off the line, and at all speeds actually, and drop the revs 150 RPM or so at 100k. With a 4 speed I would want a 3.45, with the 5 speed I'd leave the 3.64 in place. Your speedo will also be off by 5.5%.

Re: Suspension Trouble Shooting

If replacing with Bilstein B6, which have internal bump stops, do you think there any additional benefit to including the aux spring? Here's a link with pictures showing the internals of a Bilstein strut cartridge and the internal bump stops. https://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/blistein-hd-b...

In your comment above you say " aux spring" . Same thing as bump stop? I haven't heard the term aux spring before.
Yeah, I've seen it referred to as a variety of things. I've seen the aux spring description in some manuals and I think it's BMWs nomenclature.

Re: Suspension Trouble Shooting

And don't forget all tires of a given size are neither the same size nor the same shape. Some will be more of an oval cross section, some more of a rectangle. Don't forget the aux spring goes on the front too, if you're borderline that could make the difference. https://c1552172.ssl.cf0.rackcdn.com/...

Re: Suspension Trouble Shooting

I'm guessing you're rubbing in back, and guessing you have big 17s on there too, like maybe E39 size? 235/45-17? That's a big tire to try to squeeze in there without any modifications. I've got 225/50-16s on mine, 8" wheels in the back even and only rub under the most severe conditions, like literal...

I was wondering about the remaining 3 litres - thats in the torque converter - how is that flushed out/replaced -
That's the point, it can't really be flushed out except by repeated changes. First change it's about 50% new stuff. Second change it's about 75%. Third change it's up around 90%.

Re: L jet info - running rich

I did that by accident when I put L jet off an E12 onto a Bavaria. It wasn't rich, it was pig rich, black smoke rich. It ran, but not well. Didn't take too long to figure it out going over the schematic.
