Re: Differential or pinion and ring gear

I had another thought. I think diff's have magnetic drain plugs. I know trannys do, but I'm not sure about diffs. But pull the drain plug. If it's magnetic, it will have metal particles attached to it, even if it's perfect. But if it's a bearing, there won't be a whole lot. If it's the R and P I sus...

Re: Differential or pinion and ring gear

No spare diff's here. Never been into one but I've heard it's usually the bearings, not the R and P that's the problem, so I'd consider new bearings instead of the typical 300K replacement. Again, I've heard, not done, but I've heard it's possible to mark the nut and shaft, then tighten just to that...

Re: cylinder head swap

Measured my pianos: 6mm tall. Looks like I lucked into higher compression. Sweet! EA38B08F-2F27-426F-BB39-5574EA738F7A.jpeg OH wow, thats awesome, Mike whats the HP difference in those engines? Not a ton, euro 528i was 177HP, US 169HP. Still a little more fun. On valve guides, in my experience the ...

Re: Exhaust: 633CSi v 528i

79-81 528i and 80-81 633CSi used identical exhausts. Especially if you have a 2.8 I don't think the 2 unconnected manifolds as used on earlier and later M30s are going to get you anything performance wise. IMO the only downside to the one manifold bolted to the other manifold with a single downpipe ...

Re: cylinder head swap

US spec E12 2.8's had a small raised piano top crown, 2MM IIRC. Early US 2.8s, such as 69-71 E3s and E12 euro had higher compression, 9:1 pistons with a larger crown, ~6MM or so. The pic looks like more than 2MM but I can't tell for sure.

Re: Bolt length for BBS RA?

I don't know what size is needed, but you want a minimum of 6 threads engaged. Too long isn't a problem in front but will be in back if it hits the e brake parts.

Ebay is another source but even more likely to be questionable quality.

Re: cylinder head swap

Not to worry, just bolt it on up.

You do have the right cam in there or adapter nut, correct?

Re: Euro bumper rubber trim to bumper "fasteners"?

They're 6MM screws right? Got a grinder and a bucket of water? Have at it, I've done worse. :D Or weld/braze/silver solder a flange on a stud. Even if you do have a 100 point car and are showing it, nobody's going to look underneath to verify the head of the fastener.

Re: No click or fuel pump hum when AFM flap is opened?

I also like to jump pins 36 and 39 on the AFM. That bypasses the AFM flap fuel cutoff and you can test fuel pump operation without starting car. Pump will run with ignition in "ON" position before cranking. Combo relay is certainly a common culprit for your problem, as discussed. No, there is no pr...

Re: Swapping combo relay from a 76 530i to a 77 530i ?

I thought all 530s were the same. 528s I know are different. But what does Realoem say? It's not perfect, but it's an invaluable resource that's usually right.

Also as Robert said, check pinout by number and location.

Good idea Mike. I'm going to keep a record of maintenance. Do you just have the one E12 now?
Yes I do, I sold the '80 a couple of months ago. Nice kid bought it, I need to do a post on the sale.

Re: Where's the best place to buy.....

I'm not a fan of Max, but regardless... Without checking prices on those parts, Autohausaz is my favored vendor, good prices with a variety of suppliers, although the semi recent website change is much for the worse, Amazon often has good prices on things, but you have to be very careful about the m...

My problem is I have 5 older cars and must have missed the BMW at tune up time.
I don't have a collection like that anymore, but it's why Iog everything in a spreadsheet for the car. I still forget, but at least I've got a record of when things were done.

Re: 77, 78 side mirror glass

Hi Mike - curious, how were the 80/81 doors revised? That corner where the mirror mounts is different. The sheet metal has a different shape to it and the holes are in a different location. I put the later mirrors on a 79 I had long ago and it was not a bolt up. Seems like I had to trim the rubber ...
