Re: Is this power steering fluid OK for a slight top up?

It should be, it mentioned compatibility with Dexron II and III. I assume you're going for the stop leak capability? Otherwise I'd just buy a quart of the cheap stuff at a third the price.

Nothing to rebuild on the suction hose, it's just plain hose, not high pressure hose, held on with hose clamps.

Re: Power Steering

Any of the above will work. While I suspect there is some suction applied to it, very little, the original hose isn't particularly stiff. URO rubber seems to be better than many of it's other products, I had a Windshield rubber in my last E12 for a dozen years or so until I sold it, no leaks and sti...

Re: 81 e12 alternator

A 12V alternator is really nominally a 14 volt one. Charging spec is 13.6-14.5. However it's unlikely to actually be the alternator. First off does the alt light on the cluster come on? The alt gets it's excitement current to start charging thru it, so if the bulb is burned out, it's going to be a n...

Re: BMW E12 Water/Heater valve

While not a great design, I don't think those U joints are all that bad. They rarely failed before about 30 years. And I haven't tried, but I see a couple of different kludges for them. On the other hand, while I'm sure seemingly elegant at the time with the A/C integration into the travel, I think ...

Re: Crankshaft Plate Retainer Gasket

Yes, one of the bolts uses a special washer/seal. I can't insert the image, but open the link and it will show. (it's a no hotlinking thing by the owner of the server)

I also like to use Permatex #3 as an additional sealant on both sides of the gasket.

Re: BMW E12 Water/Heater valve

Not only do you not have to split the heater box, it can be done in place. Not easily, it's been described as the worst job on the car, laying on your back under the dash with just enough room for an open end wrench, but it can be done. I've done it half a dozen times or so. But not fun, not fun at ...

That is the right 3M stuff. One tube is plenty for both the front and rear windshields.

Re: windshield instal question

For years, no, decades, there was a 3M product I used. 3M still shows it but it appears to be discontinued by the lack of stock anywhere. But this product seems to be the same, I just used some this weekend working on the door seals on my E39. Even smells the same. The link won't paste but it's C.R....

Re: Seeking Heater core removal tips/advice

Thanks for info. I’m going to try and tackle it this weekend. I gave the AC unit out of the dash so I figured this would be the best time to tackle the heater core. Safe to saw mine was probably leaking because owner had disconnected the heater hoses. Not that heater cores are immune to leakage or ...

Re: windshield instal question

sealant after installation , before trim? Gasket to body and gasket to glass? Yes. BMW only spec'd it between the body and the rubber, but I like to do both. Before the lockstrip is installed. Yeah, it turns into a gooey mess as it oozes out especially after the lockstrip is installed, but it clean...

Re: windshield instal question

No, no need to pull the dash. Do be sure to use plenty of sealant as #1 it's spec'd, and #2 replacement windshields aren't quite the same size and shape as the original ones. A lot of people over on Mye28 have had problems with new ones leaking, but that's because they don't fill up the gap and the ...

Re: electric side mirrors

No experience on those mirrors per say, but what is the switch like? Anything like later E12/E28? On those the switches get dirty and need cleaning with say a pencil eraser to clean them up, you won't lose all functions, but they get really cranky and sometimes won't work at all in some directions. ...

Re: 1977 530i steering box leak - upgrades? Or fixes?

E12 and E24 thru 82 share the same box, I believe anything else would be an enormous amount of work to retrofit. 83 on E24 boxes will not work, they use the E28 box. I would not attempt to rebuild it, but instead just change the seal on the output shaft, that appears to be fairly easy to do, at leas...

Re: Heater valve replacement

Will come up with some kind of U joint solution for the left side for sure. After much thought, I think I'd try a piece of rubber hose. Maybe vacuum line even, it's softer and more flexible. How did you envision using a rubber hose? My idea involved a U-joint of the type used for robotics. I can’t ...
