Re: E28 Rear side panel on an E12?

You mean the quarter panel? If so it's an easy no.

No, if it had a speedo drive it would have been a 265/6.

Re: Getrag trans 260 and 265?

Back in the day I got a good deal on a Getrag 5 speed. I took it to a shop and had them install it in my 76 530i to replace the 4 spd. I remember that all they had to do in terms of modification was to replace the speedo drive. Can I assume that it is a 265/6 ? Yes. Theoretically it could have been...

Re: Getrag trans 260 and 265?

Good points on the speedo drive, since I'd written it up for E28s with electronic speedos I'd omitted that part.

Harder to find and much more expensive I might add, supposedly approaching a thou now.

Re: Getrag trans 260 and 265?

Something I wrote up for Mye28.com Manual Transmissions G260/5 Used on 5/6/733s from '83-'84. Non removable bell housing, waffle pattern for case casting. Considered weak and cannot accommodate a M5 clutch. Sheet metal shifter support. Overdrive 5th. G260/5 Used on '83-'88 528es, and E30 6 cylinder ...

Re: Tank draining, pump and non-starting questions

Most of the info here is on US spec cars with M30 6 cylinder engines and L jet injection, so it's confusing and wrong for your application as you have K jet which is much different. We/I will help all we can, but for the engine/fuel injection an E21 forum might be of more use as they got K jet. For ...

Re: Paging Mike and Robert Bondi

You would need to figure out which contacts are supposed to be made when the switch is off. Desired resistance would be either near zero or infinity. But the flasher probably isn't the problem, it's all the connections that are made and broken in the two different states of the switch. On a Bavaria ...

Re: Paging Mike and Robert Bondi

It's actually a common failure point, but the usual is for the aluminum arm to be bent back so much the switch is always on and won't turn off. There is a FAQ on it, http://firstfives.org/faq/hazard_switch_repair/flasher_fix.html You could also ohm out the switch to see what is supposed be making co...

Re: Paging Mike and Robert Bondi

Trying to remember, but I think your onto something with the emergency flasher switch. IIRC on my last E12 it was a little wonky with the turn signals, but when I changed the flasher switch all was well. Seems like I would get dash indication for one side, but not for the other, but a used switch ou...

Re: 5 volts to the cold start valve

The cold start valve is powered by the thermo time switch. There is a new replacement that is electronic that people are having problems with, although the old ones seemed pretty reliable. Simplistically the path is ignition switch start, to TT switch, thru it to the CSV. After several seconds, the ...

Re: Fan Clutch Removal

I'm having trouble removing the fan/fan clutch on my '78 530i. It has the single 13mm bolt at the front of the fan. A couple questions: 1. Does a fan clutch removal tool (similar to those used for newer BMWs) work to hold the pulleys and water pump impeller in place? It should if you can get it in ...

Re: Steering play - Pitman arm or center tie-rod?

If you have play at that joint, yes, it would be the center tie rod, and they are something of a weak link.

I believe the other parts, dust boot etc, have always been included when I've replaced the center tie rod. Always bought aftermarket so BMW may not include them.

Re: brushable body color paint

In a FWIW, I recently saw, I think on Mye28 although I can't find it at the moment, something that said the trunk and engine areas were done with non metallic paint. Same color as the body, but simply non metallic. And in my minds eye that seems right. Also you can buy metallic powder if you need to...

Re: clutch plate

It's changing somewhat, but traditionally the manufacturer has been the worst place to buy something, meaning highest priced. I think they're set up to make things, not sell things at retail which is kind of an inconvenience to them so they make sure they turn a profit on them.
