Re: A/C installation from scratch

Some picture updates... I scored the base plate for the evaporator box. It supposedly from an 84 528e. One problem solved. You can also see the condensate drain in the center. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53566532523_5224e614d4_4k.jpg Here's the duct work blank plate off my non-AC car. Presum...

Re: E28 Evaporator core vs. E12

FWIW, I found my 2006 posts talking about some of these parts. I don't recall if Eric had referenced the same stuff for his work, but we both used that same parallel flow condensor. The SPAL elec fan P/N looks different, but that also means they both work as options. I'll look for my photos from thi...

Re: A/C installation from scratch

Hi Mike, PM sent. Thanks for sharing...that's encouraging. My hole saws went through the firewall surpisingly easy and I was working from the inside. Deciding exactly where to drill them was a bit of worry... Robert I did it on a Bavaria long ago. Pretty straightforward except I neglected to do the ...

A/C installation from scratch

I'm curious if anyone's done this before? Not repairing the A/C, but installing a system in a car that has none..... I'm moving this project up on my Euro restoration car (77 528) because the car is otherwise generally unusable in my Texas climate. I'm dividing my installation into three stages as m...

Re: Repairing/replacing seat covers?

I just did an entire seat restoration using World UPH front and back seat kits in pearl beige. I bet it looks a little different to just do one piece, unless you do both sides for symmetry. Another trick if it's just color is get the new vinyl have someone vinyl dye match to your existing....that al...

Re: Sr441x starter contd.

FWIW, I worked through some issues with the SR441x a couple years ago. Biggest gotcha was leaving that one wire disconnected since I didn't realize it was a non-stock starter from the previous owner....

Re: hazard light switch

Beyond expected cosmetic differences, there are definitely regional differences in functionality. I naively bought a U.S. spec hazard light switch for my German-spec Euro car a couple years ago. These two parts actually differ by one pin, so definitely no substitution....won't even fit in the female...

Re: Supporting the Engine for Oil Pan Removal

Thank you Robert - FYI, you were one of the posters in 2001 saying that your father had replaced the oil pump from under the car. Jacking from underneath seems preferable. Oh yeah, a multigenerational effort here. :-) I did that job myself around 2013/2014 or so. BTW, the jack from the bottom strat...

Re: E28 Evaporator core vs. E12

Still slowly collecting parts for this project.... I acquired an E28 blower box from a 528e and took pictures of it next to the E12/earlyE24 blower box. The units are essentially the same from the outside, so the main difference, as discussed, is really just the different fittings for interfacing wi...

Re: Supporting the Engine for Oil Pan Removal

I've done this job from the bottom. You don't need to remove the subframe. You do want to remove the front sway bar and you'll also want to loosen/remove the nuts on the motor mounts so you can jack the motor up a little bit - be aware of top of bellhousing clearance to the drive shaft tunnel. Have ...

Re: Aux Fan Relay

Thank you! Great info. Several of my usual BMW parts sources have Wehrle relays as replacements for the BMW part # I listed in the OP. A couple of follow-up questions. 1. Do you use either of the Bosch part numbers you listed for the aux fan in your E12 (the relay sitting next to the fuse box, not ...

Re: Aux Fan Relay

Good question. There do seem to be an excessive amount of part numbers on these cube relays and seemingly multiple supercession lineages. I've got these two relays in use in my fuse boxes on multiple vehicles: Bosch (black plastic case): 0 332 019 451 Bosch (orange plastic case): 0 332 019 456 These...

Re: E28 Evaporator core vs. E12

After a little delay, I took the measurements and gathered some pictures of the evaporator box I have on the shelf. It was sourced as an E12 part, but clearly came off a 11/79 633csi. It looks like the E12 evaporator and blower box does seem to check out as shared with at least some of the E24 linea...

Re: E28 Evaporator core vs. E12

BTW, I would be happy to sell my E28 evap box, and I think it does perform better, but I also think the biggest problem is the condenser, especially, repeat, especially if you're not running R12. The other refrigerants need a substantial condenser upgrade just to get back to OE capability, let alon...

Re: Condenser Inlet Tube Leak

It's so neat you have US/Euro 1977 examples of the same car :!: 8) Are they both the same color by any chance :?: BMW's aim was that the 530i and Euro 528 had identical acceleration and top speed. Maybe they did, but perhaps they didn't deliver the performance in the same way :?: Not the same color...
