Re: Broke the steering lock mechanism on the 530i parts car....

ooops, this post is a month old. If you haven't already figured it out I would try taking the ignition switch assembly out from under the steering column. That is where the steering lock part is pushed up by a cam between the key cylinder and the electrical switch part. You may have to deal with the...

Re: Output Shaft Removal?

I think most of us work on our own cars. What you did is what you needed to do. I would have used either an air impact wrench with a good tight fitting 8mm hex bit and cleaning out the inside hex first or even my old hit it with a hammer impact driver with a good 8mm hex bit. You could have used som...

Re: Differential or pinion and ring gear

My differential went bad when the car was about 25 years old. However I only had about 130000mi on it. I have been storing the car in the winter for years. I always wondered if the winter storage had some detrimental effect on the bearings. The replacement differential actually had about 180000 mile...

Re: Differential or pinion and ring gear

Years ago I had a differential go bad but it took years before it finally went. It was whining lightly for quite a while (many years) and suddenly the whine got very loud like a siren. In my case It was the pinion bearings going bad. Of course the final failure started occurring far from home. Event...

Re: It's Alive! It's Alive! The no fuel issue......

Inside the bad relay you will probably find the pc board the relays are mounted to has various cracked solder joints and maybe some corrosion. You maybe able to resurrect the bad relay if you want to try opening the case up and touching up the solder joints. New ones are getting expensive and hard t...

Re: No click or fuel pump hum when AFM flap is opened?

And the link from the FAQ for a wiring diagram of the L-Jet fuel injections system which includes the fuel pump schematics is:

http://www.firstfives.org/faq/ljet/528i ... ematic.PDF

There are also some other info in our FAQ to guide you to the right pins to short to see if the pumps run.

Re: No click or fuel pump hum when AFM flap is opened?

I have had various fuel pump problems over the years with my 528i. None were ever the fuel pumps. First check using a multimeter if the AFM contacts are closing. I have had those contacts inside go bad. You can pop off the plastic cover, in addition to the AFM resistor pc board you will see two bras...

Re: Power Window wiring?

I am going to post my own answer for posterity. I found the relay that powers the power windows. It is located under the dash on the side of the junction block near the hood release lever. In my case the relay was working fine. However It was not getting any power. At least in my 1980 car, the red w...

Power Window wiring?

So on my 1980 528i the power windows have stopped working. They starting going intermittent for the last few days and then they completely died. There is no power input to the two little breakers underneath near the steering column (feed by red with green stripe wires if I recall). To get the window...

Rear wheel bearing set from Pelican/BMW.. missing parts?

The missing two parts are the seals I believe. I just recently had to change driver side rear wheel bearings after 37 years (I believe they were original). I used new Timkin bearings and seals from RockAuto. I believe you need to order the seals. Good luck getting the old ones out without messing th...

Driveline Vibration Update

Updating from a post many months ago. I finally purchased a rebuilt driveshaft and installed it. It completely fixed the vibration issue. Looking at the old driveshaft that I removed everything looked pretty good. No obvious bad CV joints and the center bearing felt ok. Strange but a new shaft fixed...

Well that is certainly less expensive, thank you. I am not sure it will fit my 1980 528i since it says for the 530i? I'll have to research some.

Sources for rear mufflers???

Well I took a look at my E12 in the garage for the winter and it looks like I will be needing a new rear muffler. Looking on the web there does not seem to be many options. It looks like the options are stock BMW or stainless (and stainless is way too expensive). I changed the center resonator a whi...

RE: Driveline vibration

Thanks for the hints. Actually the driveshaft looks almost like new although it has been in the car for 20 years. It is still nice and black with very little rust. I do remember a few weights welded onto the shaft so I will have to check to see if it looks like any of the weights are missing from th...
