I've been dealing with a combo relay issue that was just recently resolved. I ended up separating the case on mine and tried to start the car while looking at the internals to verify they were working. Not very scientific, but it's an option.

I get a combined 17 mpg in my 528i with a Metric Mechanic motor with L-Jet. It runs quite rich, I have considered opening the AFM to see if I can do better.
