Re: M30B35 cylinder head bolt/Rocker shaft issues

Only problem is even the bolts that I took off of my cylinder head didn’t have the proper shoulder length to properly set the rocker shaft in place. If you look at the original diagrams from the 70s-80s the bolt in the diagram actually has a long shoulder. I’m not sure if BMW decided to cut costs by...

Re: M30B35 cylinder head bolt/Rocker shaft issues

Aren’t the stock head bolts torque to yield bolts? I’m doing a stock set up. No plans on big boost or anything. Just trying to squeeze as much power out of a stock 3.5L. So far my only mods planned are Miller Performance MAF swap, Headers, and exhaust.

Re: M30B35 cylinder head bolt/Rocker shaft issues

Apparently the original head bolts had a longer shoulder that would go down deep enough to help locate the rocker shaft. The new ajusa and updated oem ones have too short a shoulder that after you include the washer, it just doesn’t go anywhere near the curve cut on the rocker shaft. I’m experimenti...

Re: M30B35 cylinder head bolt/Rocker shaft issues

I was thinking of either doing that or putting a sleeve on the headbolt that will be big enough to seat the rocker shaft properly. I wonder if there’s any more options out there. I just don’t understand why BMW would make such a rocker shaft design and then not make the proper head bolt to work with...

M30B35 cylinder head bolt/Rocker shaft issues

Hello fellow first fivers, I have an issue that I need expert advice on. So I recently purchased an M30B35 engine. I had machine work done on the cylinder head. For some strange reason I’m having a hard time getting the rocker shaft to position properly. I understand that the head bolts are used to ...

Re: 2.8L to 3.5L

To add to my previous question, is the a different ECU between automatic and manual transmissions on the M30B35 engines? I pulled the engine and ecu from a 735i auto but I plan on using the 5spd from a 535i. Will my 735i ecu work or will I have to use a ecu from the 535i?

Re: 2.8L to 3.5L

Aside from the motor mount brackets, is there anything else I need to have?

Re: 2.8L to 3.5L

So is the motor mounts what’s different or is the actual bolt pattern to the block different between a 1988 and 1989? If it’s just the motor mount that’s different then can I just get the mount from a 1988 or older and bolt it up to my block? Also thanks for replying

2.8L to 3.5L

I have a question for the two lads who wrote the article on the 2.8-3.5l conversion. I saw that you said the 89 and up 3.5L needed extra things. Can someone elaborate on what is needed? I took a complete 3.5L out of a 1989 735i among with harness and motronic and the clutch kit out of a ‘87 535i. Wh...

I wouldn't turn that screw if I were you. The issues lies within the AFM electronics. The screw is only for idle adjustments. The contacts are not sending information to the ecu so it doesn't know how much fuel to send. I was able to source an AFM off of eBay for $30 from a salvage yard in San Berna...

I use to have that same problem too in my US spec E12. I swapped out the AFM for another and it fixed the problem. Your euro spec AFM could be damaged. Try to source another one.

Engine starting issues Please help!!!

For some reason my 1979 e12 has a hard time starting when it's warm outside or has been sitting in the sun. During cold starts it fires up on occasion. What is weird is when I unplug the plug going into the AFM it fires up a lot easier. I have two AFM and both exhibit this same problem. It does not ...
