Power steering pump - again.

1978 BMW 530i. Broke one of the 3 ears that attach the power steering pump to the adjustment brackets. One that broke is the top rear. Broke it by applying too much force extracting set screw to drain pump. My question is will I be able to maintain belt tension with only two bolts or is my pump junk...

Power steering purge - follow up

On E9 forum found info on purging system : can drain system by removing set screw at bottom of pump - 9mm hex hex screw w/ 7 mm head - have to remove pump from mounting bracket to access hex screw and secure it by attaching upper mounts on pump to lower mounts on bracket temporarily to get enough le...

Re: Power steering fluid purge - follow up

I found info on E9 site that the power steering pump has a drain plug - 9 mm hex set screw - that can be accessed by taking pump off its support, allowing access to set screw and thus drain fluid w/o even having to siphon off the reservoir. I’m wondering if I should fill with atf again and drain or ...

Power steering fluid purge

Having trouble finding diy info on how to change power steering fluid on E-12. Can I purge enough fluid by siphoning all fluid from power steering reservoir and replacing w/ fluid to top up. I don’t want to upset the lines if I don’t have to and end up w/ leak I don’t have now - which is what usuall...

Re: Starter Bosch sr441x

Right you are. I see that the wire from 6 oclock on solenoid leads to a confluence of wire loom w / other wires that branch out to alternator … The coil ( - ) connects to distributor; coil (+ ) connects to ballast resistor, ballast resistor other connection is green wire running to fuse box. Ballast...

Re: Starter Bosch sr441x

My coil, that I referred to as red, might actually be the original coil , which you described as black w/ brown top. It is definitely not a red body. I referred to it as red because top was reddish, orangeish but it is more brown as you have enlightened me. The ignition wire runs from 6 oclock on so...

Re: Starter Bosch sr441x

So, I determined that: I have a 0.9 ohm ballast resistor, I have red top coil and just installed sr 441 x starter to replace my old sr 995x starter. My wiring of starter is wire from 6 oclock on starter to coil ( - ) position. Do I need a 1.8 ohm ballast resistor now. Car starts and runs but have no...

Re: Starter Bosch sr441x

Thanks; Mike W, R Bondi, Hb 528i : My take is I don’t need but the ignition wire from 6 oclock position on sr 441x to the coil ( - ) position. Has started this way so far. My car 1978 530i has resistor - 3 inch porcelain piece - on right front fender next to red coil. One end connected to green wire...

Re: Sr441x starter contd.

Thanks all for the help. I’m confused about it being good idea for using the added ballast - I don’t know that I’m using ballast , am I ? ? I was going to use 4 prong relay and I thought you said that it was definitely not needed w/ the sr441x. The relay was going to provide the 1.8 ohms of resistan...

Sr441x starter contd.

I have a resistor wire. The old sr995 starter was connected to coil ( + ) by wire from 12 oclock on solenoid. I have eliminated this on sr441x and only have ignition wire to solenoid at 6 oclock. I think my friend was saying that in cold conditions the relay would provide extra volts only at ignitio...

Re: Starter Bosch sr441x

My mechanic friend came over yesterday. Car starts and runs w/ ignition wire at 6 oclock position on solenoid of Bosch starter sr 441x and 12 oclock position not wired. He checked w/ his volt meter btwn resistor and ignition and found too much draw - should have been 0.00. Recommend I set up relay t...

Re: Starter Bosch sr441x

Update on situation: My friend, who is professional mechanic , assessed situation and his verdict was to not connect the solenoid 12 oclock terminal to the coil ( +) . Car started and ran although a little rough. He said that the sr 441x starter has dual dual coil whereas the old 495 x does not. He ...

Re: Starter Bosch sr441x

This is from 2002 site and pertains to my situation. What fuse would I use on e12 - fuel pump ? as it is on when car starting and running - or what would be better fuse ? How would I hook up to fuse box ? Would it be from bottom or just top ? This post is from the 2002 forum Mike attached in his pos...
