Re: E28 Evaporator core vs. E12
I find it interesting that the E28 evaporator core is so much smaller dimensionally. I would think that the E12 copper serpentine would conduct more heat than the aluminum ones on the E28, and that the larger size of the E12 fins would also result in better thermal transfer. So the better E28 perfor...

Re: E28 Evaporator core vs. E12
I used a Spal 30102030 with curved blades. It's quieter than the OEM fan but by no means silent. The Spal p/n referenced above is for the mounting brackets.

Re: E28 Evaporator core vs. E12
Hi Ken - Welcome. The 14x20 Vintage Air condenser (03261-VUC) fit for me using short-drop 90-degree fittings for the hoses. The mounting takes a little engineering but isn't that difficult. The factory top mounting tabs work. In my install, I used SPAL 30130011 mounting brackets which are long and e...

Re: Giubo
The only downside is that the shifter geometry is now a bit farther forward, so that your knuckles hit the cigarette lighter going into 3rd. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. I had the shift lever rotated 180 degrees. I read on the Auto Solutions site somewhere they it's easy to get it wrong,...

Interesting, Gary. They must have changed the design at some point.

Re: OK to use synthetic oil in trans and diff?
https://www.firstfives.org/phpBB-3.2.1/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=31333 I recall this being discussed here when I changed mine. LOL Cory, you initiated that thread four years ago. I think we all have E12 items that have been pending for that long or longer. Anyway there's good info in that thread. I've ...

Re: What Sanden AC compressor do you recommend?
Jon - sorry I thought Dave started this thread. I used a Vintage Air 14x20 universal fit, and that went in without much fuss with bracketry. Fitting the fan required a little more experimenting with various hardware. Altogether not a difficult job, but I agree with you that the OEM setup eliminates ...

Re: What Sanden AC compressor do you recommend?
It's not my place, Dave, but are you sure you want to use the OEM serpentine condenser? I would also be tempted to use a NOS condenser if I had one, but here's the deal - the OEM aux fan is loud and totally outclassed by modern fans (motor technology is way better today). So if you're going to use a...

Re: Center Tie Rod
The new center tie rod has dust boots that appear to replace the protection cap and the rubber bushing that was underneath the cap. Am I OK if I just install the new tie rod as-is, or do I need to source other parts? The protection cap appears to just function as a dust boot. https://i.ibb.co/pxBHmS...

Center Tie Rod
My last thread ended with essentially crossing the steering box off the list of perps for the steering dead-zone. I finally got the car up on the QuickJacks and quickly found that the ball joint on the center tie rod at the pitman arm has too much play. The flex disc on the spindle does not have any...

Re: Steering Box Adjustment Screw
From older threads on FF it appears that the joint at the Pitman arm on the center link is frequently the culprit. The tie rods and control arms on my car are new, so this seems like a good place to focus, as well as replace the flex coupler. Most sources for the center drag link list the part as NL...

Re: Steering Box Adjustment Screw
I exchanged some emails with Jay Stratton who rebuilds these boxes. In essence, he said they almost never wear out internally. Seals get old and leaky and needle bearings can show signs of aging, but the internal worm and sector gears have, in his opinion, never shown signs of wear. He therefore sai...

Re: Steering Box Adjustment Screw
A dead zone at center. I've monkeyed with the screw a lot, and the dead spot remains even when the box is starting to bind from overtightening. You can turn the wheel a couple degrees in either direction without reaction at the wheels. On twisty backroad, it doesn't matter a whole lot, but on the hi...
