Ventilation Control Knob

All: My ventilation knob (right side) isn't working. The knob doesn't feel to be just spinning freely, so it feels like the little u-joint is still intact. I suspect the problem is at the bellcrank on the firewall side of the box, and that it'll need to come out to access it. Has anyone addressed an...

Re: HELP: Water Valve Replacement

Jay - I'm curious how you fared on this. Did you wind up pulling the entire heater box? My ventilation knob (right side) isn't working. I suspect the problem is at the bellcrank on the firewall side of the box, and that it'll need to come out to access it. Has anyone addressed this? I'm hoping this ...

Re: Rear Oil Pan Bolts

Hey Joe - nice to hear from you and great news about the E12. Is Naomi back on the road? I think the last pix I saw were from last fall during the repaint and rear axle rehab with the LSD.

Re: Rear Oil Pan Bolts

Hi Carl - Other than Joe Boston, I know of zero E12s on the road up here. I've seen only one over the years, a 530i in Connecticut that was obviously still be driven as a daily or nearly so. When I saw it it, an older woman was behind the wheel. I assume the road salt has done its part to thin the h...

Re: Rear Oil Pan Bolts

Following up for posterity - a 1/4" drive thin-walled 10mm socket can access the rear oil pan bolt.

Rear Oil Pan Bolts

Gents: I noticed an annoying leak from the oil pan gasket, annoying because it was replaced less than 3000 miles ago in 2019. Some of the bolts were torqued below spec. I can't get to one bolt at the rear which is recessed and the bell housing has an annoying little ridge so a socket cannot pass. Th...

Re: Engine Overheating

Hi Jay - the aux fan is loud, and you should definitely hear it when the AC is on when still and at idle. There are two thermostats that come into play, which area discussed in other threads. https://www.firstfives.org/phpBB-3.2.1/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=29016 Robert's cooling system FAQ also covers ...

Re: Reinstalling the cat

Thanks Mike. I followed tlake's lead which took me to an outfit in the UK (Jetex) that sold the Swedish Redback Classic. At only 10" long (excluding the flanges) it shouldn't be too big of a problem to wedge in. Seems, using the eyeball test, to have good flow-through and is nice and wide. If you fl...

Re: brushable body color paint

This may be a bone-headed suggestion, but could you allow some of the volatile solvents in the spray-on formulation to evaporate before brushing on? Maybe do a test by allowing a sample of spray-on paint to achieve a good brush-on consistency before application.

I installed ST 52015 on mine (28mm front/22mm rear), which I think is the set IE sells. I think you'll be very pleased if you're still running the stock sway bars.

Reinstalling the cat

Gents, my E12 is currently in TN, which requires emission testing on post 1974 cars. It's for all practical purposes an integrity check, which requires a cat on cars originally equipped with one. The PO of my E12 deleted the cat, which is characterized as "tampering" under TN regs. So, I'm going to ...

Re: Suspension Upgrade

There was a thread in March started by EE-onetwo where I think he used the same combination you're thinking about here. Patinabeforepolish talked to Bilstein directly, who told him B6s were ok to use on lowering springs. I don't know if that application involved 40mm lowering.
