I wish I could remember. I did some good Polk 4x6s up front and components in the rear. I'm guessing your car has the 4x6s in the rear instead of the bigger premium housings? Check the easy stuff like the thermostat first. I replaced mine as a preventive thing back when I got my current 528i and I had multiple failures with the replacement tstats... should have just left it alone! I guess that's the quickest way to start, stick it in some hot water and see what happens. ...

Alright, I figured out that the answer hinges on the definition of proper. It is certainly very possible to do it by making an incision in the carpet between the firewall and the blower. It comes out easily then and you could install the carpet in a way that no one would ever know that incision had...
