thanks guys.

The timing is on and I put on pertronix a couple months ago. It runs good, just seems a little rich.

Was hoping a half turn or turn would do something.

Cheers

rich adjustment???

So, I've figured out I am running too rich. When I start her, can smell gas. When I turn her off, can smell gas. She dips down to 8 after reving and levels off at 1,000 rpm after a few seconds. Also, when I pump the breaks, rpm jumps. I read Peters bit on it and my Chilton actually shows the adjustm...

If your sure it's the radiator, and not the thermostat or the water pump or something like that, and it's done, and you can afford it, I would definitely buy a new one, if it was me, and a new thermostat which are pretty cheap and easy. Car looks really clean and nice, and your heading into summer, ...

window motors fixed!!!!!

Just as an update- Months ago, I switched the passenger side window motors and the front was not working, and I would rather have that working than the rear, (no sun roof in my 78'.) So, the other day, the front motor went dead, so both windows were out on that side. I yanked both and tested both of...

window motor removal for 78' 530i???

Hey all, I need to pull a window motor and check it. I did these months ago, but for some reason now, am totally stuck. CHiltons say to pull the window, but I seemed to remember lodging something in there and avoid pulling out the window and just the motor. Which bolts am I looking to loosen? Any ad...

Done

So, my aux. fan works after doing the cardboard test, (thanks W.). I flushed the cooling system last summer when I got the car and drove it down to Ca. through 100 weather, with the temp gauge pegging and STRESSING out. I did it again when I replaced the started a month ago. Think I mentioned it. No...

on this topic

Since I am not sure my aux. fan works either, I am going to do the cardboard check. But, was also wondering, where everyone's temp gauge sits at under normal conditions. Mine sits about and 1/8 below the midway mark. Is that pretty normal for stock radiator? Seems like I remember my prior 5's runnin...

Wild guess

I'm sure the "gurus" will give better advice, but I am going to take a wild guess and say it's the timing.

When you set it, did you do it at 2200 rpm with the vacuum hoses disconnected?

Kinda sounds like it may be way advanced, or retarded, but more likely advanced.

Just a thought.

thanks

Thanks Mike. Think I will just do a basic once over then and clean everything and hit the wires and start from there. It would be nice, but is not a something that HAS to be done at this point. I've found that when I ask for advice here, and or read the archives a few times, project seem to work out...

thanks again mike.

I was looking at it again today for a few minutes and could see the locking mechanisim for the trunk. I was going to actually go for the big clean tomorrow. Would you know, is that a separate lock motor on the inside of the right back fender? I assume it is for the gas door and the trunk locks. It w...

central locking system........location of grounds in trunk??

I was un-aware my 78' had a central locking system for the entire car and now am interested in it. So, I am wondering, is the the trunk lock on my car supposed to shut and open the door locks as well? And the gas door/lid? I know the newer models do. I have the door locks working fine, and looked ye...

for my 78' 530i

I just installed a pretronix ignition system last week, and set the timing to original specs. She seems much happier, especially after a new ground strap yesterday. Of course, the up-grade to a 528i ignition like mike w said who be the way, but the pertronix was easy, fast, and 70 bucks. I'd already...

starter, pertronix ignition, fuel pump, timing......LONG.

Howdy All, Been a while since I've posted, but I've gotten around to a bunch of stuff on my 78' polaris, non-sunroof, 158,000, 4 speed I picked up last summer in Seattle and thought I would update as I have finally got half of what I want done, thanks to this site, and had all ready decided to keep ...
