Re: 1976 BMW 530i "Eleanor" rebuild project

I got some good work in today. http://www.keehncomputer.com/Photos/BMW530i1976/Drilled_out_bracket.jpg As I mentioned previously, the alternator/power steering bracket bolt hole that connects to the oil pan was no longer aligned, due to the windage tray and two oil pan gaskets. I drilled out a hole,...

Re: 1976 BMW 530i "Eleanor" rebuild project

Wow! 19 October was my last post  My excuse is that I had to wait for BMW parts 11531256502 and 11111250587. I have the first ("Jules Verne device" bracket) but I'm still waiting for the second ("Jules Verne" coolant hose connector), which is coming from Latvia. Both parts were sourced from e...

Re: 76 530i Aux Air Valve aka Jules Verne Device

Karl, You can disassemble these units with a shop press, but I would advise against it (ask me how I know  ). Instead, I'd suggest getting a cheap ultrasonic parts cleaner (If you have Harbor Freights in Canada, they sell a small benchtop unit) and carb cleaner in a can. The ultrasonic cleaner...

Re: rear half /output shaft - torque setting

Gary,

I'm digging your pressure washer setup - that is a persistent problem for me, and I simply resign myself to wearing grubby clothes, because I know I'm getting a greasy bath

Recommend locktite red for these bolts by the way, so I second HB528i's recommendation.

Chrome corner mouldings on front and rear windows, how to remove without bending?

Friends, As I research on how to remove Eleanor's front and rear windows to replace the weatherstripping, I want to make sure I preserve...not bend, the corner metal mouldings. http://www.keehncomputer.com/Photos/BMW530i1976/Corner_mouldings.png Referring to Numbers 5, 6, 10, and 11 - the little met...

Re: front fender rust - near sill.

Gary, That's a "bang up" job you're doing  Seriously though, it looks great! I'd imagine you could get a perfectly smooth contour if you had an english wheel, since a beanbag and hammers can only go so far. Also, concerning fillers, I'd imagine it would depend on the purity of the lead. I have ...

Oh, one other thing Gary, I'm bookmarking your post for when I do my windshield and rear glass. I'll be sure to give you credit for making my job a lot easier :D

Re: windscreen install - FAQ needed

I'll be replacing the gaskets on both the windshield and rear glass. I'll obviously, take pictures as part of my Eleanor rebuild. It's going to be one of my projects in the very near future.

Re: Driveshaft center hanger bearing and bracket?

For god's sake, stay away from URO!!!

I have always had problems with their parts. Either they fail way too early, or the part doesn't line up like it should. Every time I gave them a chance, I got burned.

You know the saying, "you get what you pay for."

Re: 1980 528i “Lucky Find” Project

It appears that the air filter was not installed correctly. I am noting the bracket that holds on the lower portion of the air box appears bent upwards. You should check that and simply bend it back into place if it is bent.

Re: front fender rust - near sill.

Gary, You might have another option: if you didn't want to cut out the rusty sections (after cleaning, of course), you could use lead as a body filler instead of fiberglass or bondo. The distinction with lead is that it's not just a filler, but it contributes to the structure of the piece, effective...

Eric, you always make me laugh  However, my two-post lift will be a commercial solution...I'm not THAT brave! Lock, not a problem! I'm glad people are able to take something away from my project...that's why I'm documenting this in the first place. The "Iron Maiden" that you fabricated is IMO, ...

Re: Valve clearance gap?

If I can offer an additional suggestion: Not aware if everyone here knows about ZDDP additives to motor oil. The elevator speech is that ZDDP additives assist flat tappets (our engines) by creating a thin anti-wear surface on metal parts that come in direct contact with one another. Essentially, the...

Re: 1976 BMW 530i "Eleanor" rebuild project

Checking back in, now that we are "kind of" settled into our new house. Eleanor is still at the old house's garage, mainly because the garage at the new place isn't big enough  I'm thinking of keeping her over there even when she is finished, because I can't stand the thought of parking her ou...

Re: paint codes

Gary, all, Here's another great website to use your paint code to match up to which vendor carries that exact paint code: https://paintref.com/cgi-bin/colorcodedisplay.cgi?make=BMW For example, when I look up Eleanor's color (Pastel blue) for 1976, it tells me that Ditzler PPG and Dupont are the onl...
