Re: 1976 BMW 530i "Eleanor" rebuild project

Agreed. My Case 580c leaks a bit of hydraulic fluid, but that's because the seals and hoses are worn. That is another project I intend to tackle this year (making new hydraulic lines). Update: The boom lift IS fixed (FINALLY!!!) and I've drilled all the holes in the garage steel, ready to receive th...

Re: 1976 BMW 530i "Eleanor" rebuild project

Latest update: http://www.keehncomputer.com/Photos/BMW530i1976/Bringing_Engine1.jpg http://www.keehncomputer.com/Photos/BMW530i1976/Bringing_Engine2.jpg I carefully moved Eleanor's engine from our upstairs out to the new garage. http://www.keehncomputer.com/Photos/BMW530i1976/Eleanor_in_new_garage.j...

Re: 1976 BMW 530i "Eleanor" rebuild project

Eleanor's officially moved into the new garage now. However, I'm currently in the process of hanging radiant barrier, which is sort of like tin foil on a roll, but it's much tougher and resistant to tear. The problem is that, even though I'm using self-tapping screws, the project is taking WAYY too ...

Re: 1976 BMW 530i "Eleanor" rebuild project

Thanks Eric. I appreciate the vote of confidence, but there's a lot more to be done to the garage before I can start wrenching on Eleanor. That being said, the garage structure is COMPLETE!!! http://keehncomputer.com/Photos/Garage_Exterior_Initial.jpg If you notice, the garage is white and blue...I ...

Re: 1976 BMW 530i "Eleanor" rebuild project

Great pics. The restoration is coming along nicely. If you need any small bits and miscellaneous parts I may be able to help you out. Thanks Karl, I appreciate the gesture. All of my parts are still strewn 6 ways from Sunday here at the new house. EVERYTHING has been waiting for me to save up for a...

Re: 1976 BMW 530i "Eleanor" rebuild project

Very good progress here Mike. I'm wondering what made you decide to get a new AAV? I assume the cleaning didn't make the old one function properly? I suspect mine isn't working properly either . I noticed in your pic the shape of the opening is a different shape than the one in my car https://www.f...

Re: 1976 BMW 530i "Eleanor" rebuild project

It's taken quite some time, but I'm getting a 30' x 60' garage built! As I've stated before, the existing "garage" is little more than a utility shed, and does nothing to protect from the elements, much less allow me to work on Eleanor. To make matters worse, the floor is sloped, making an...

Re: 1976 BMW 530i "Eleanor" rebuild project

I got some good work in today. http://www.keehncomputer.com/Photos/BMW530i1976/Drilled_out_bracket.jpg As I mentioned previously, the alternator/power steering bracket bolt hole that connects to the oil pan was no longer aligned, due to the windage tray and two oil pan gaskets. I drilled out a hole,...

Re: 1976 BMW 530i "Eleanor" rebuild project

Wow! 19 October was my last post  My excuse is that I had to wait for BMW parts 11531256502 and 11111250587. I have the first ("Jules Verne device" bracket) but I'm still waiting for the second ("Jules Verne" coolant hose connector), which is coming from Latvia. Both parts...

Re: 76 530i Aux Air Valve aka Jules Verne Device

Karl, You can disassemble these units with a shop press, but I would advise against it (ask me how I know  ). Instead, I'd suggest getting a cheap ultrasonic parts cleaner (If you have Harbor Freights in Canada, they sell a small benchtop unit) and carb cleaner in a can. The ultrasonic cleaner...

Re: rear half /output shaft - torque setting

Gary,

I'm digging your pressure washer setup - that is a persistent problem for me, and I simply resign myself to wearing grubby clothes, because I know I'm getting a greasy bath

Recommend locktite red for these bolts by the way, so I second HB528i's recommendation.

Chrome corner mouldings on front and rear windows, how to remove without bending?

Friends, As I research on how to remove Eleanor's front and rear windows to replace the weatherstripping, I want to make sure I preserve...not bend, the corner metal mouldings. http://www.keehncomputer.com/Photos/BMW530i1976/Corner_mouldings.png Referring to Numbers 5, 6, 10, and 11 - the little met...

Re: front fender rust - near sill.

Gary, That's a "bang up" job you're doing  Seriously though, it looks great! I'd imagine you could get a perfectly smooth contour if you had an english wheel, since a beanbag and hammers can only go so far. Also, concerning fillers, I'd imagine it would depend on the purity of the lea...
