Re: E28 Evaporator core vs. E12

Be sure your Spal fan has curved blades or it will sound like an F-16.

Re: Repairing/replacing seat covers?

The C pillars can be painted with SEM Ranger White vinyl paint after careful masking, I did this on my 79 and you can’t tell the difference.

Re: What Sanden AC compressor do you recommend?

The 709 is the most popular Sanden I think. Jay lives not too far from me and has been invaluable in rebuilding steering pumps and steering boxes. He rebuilt an axial compressor like you describe and indeed there is one part that needs to removed to replace a seal and if it breaks you are screwed. T...

Re: Starter Bosch sr441x

You are good with current coil and resistor, the starter is not part of the equation.

Re: Starter Bosch sr441x

My coil, that I referred to as red, might actually be the original coil , which you described as black w/ brown top. It is definitely not a red body. I referred to it as red because top was reddish, orangeish but it is more brown as you have enlightened me. The ignition wire runs from 6 oclock on s...

Re: Starter Bosch sr441x

So, I determined that: I have a 0.9 ohm ballast resistor, I have red top coil and just installed sr 441 x starter to replace my old sr 995x starter. My wiring of starter is wire from 6 oclock on starter to coil ( - ) position. Do I need a 1.8 ohm ballast resistor now. Car starts and runs but have n...

Re: Starter Bosch sr441x

Yes, that is correct. The ceramic ballast resistor drops the voltage to 9V for the coil when using the original black coil which needs 0.9 ohms of resistance. The replacement for the black coil was silver with a green or red label or a red coil. When using the red coil you need to follow the instruc...

Re: Sr441x starter contd.

A relay isn’t going to provide resistance, forget the relay. If you had used a relay it would have been to power the starter, not the coil. Your green wire at the coil brings power from the ignition switch. In your car resistance is provided by the resistor wire which is hidden in the harness and is...

Re: Sr441x starter contd.

I have a resistor wire. The old sr995 starter was connected to coil ( + ) by wire from 12 oclock on solenoid. I have eliminated this on sr441x and only have ignition wire to solenoid at 6 oclock. I think my friend was saying that in cold conditions the relay would provide extra volts only at igniti...

Re: Starter Bosch sr441x

You don’t need a relay with the 441x, it is a permanent magnet starter and spins much faster than the old one. Old school ones needed this, new ones don’t, don’t make it complicated. I don’t know if your 530i has a ballast resistor or a resistor wire, either way the coil gets only 9v, that is the pu...

Re: Starter Bosch sr441x

You only run a wire from fuse to coil if you have no power at the coil when you turn ignition key on, period. Looks like you do have power now which is great. Unless I missed it I don’t know which model and year you have. A red coil requires a 1.8 ohm resistor as stated on the coil, the black coil n...

Re: Starter Bosch sr441x

Do not use the 12:00 terminal, ever. Run a temporary wire from the battery to the coil + terminal and the start the car. If this works you have a bad wire from power source which is a green wire from fuse block in an e9, color should be the same but I have not checked. All of this could be caused by...

Re: Starter Bosch sr441x

When I installed this starter in my last e9 I hooked the 12:00 wire to my coil like the original starter. The ballast resistor became cherry red and started to smoke. As started earlier it is not used and not needed, it is live 100% of the time, not good. On my most recent e9 I put a new starter in ...

Re: max 14" tire size?

I would stick with 205/70-14, Longstone carries the Pirelli CN-36 but is out of stock currently but a great tire, currently installed on my e9.
