Re: Aux Fan

I have a new Rad. Its OEM Brass but new. Temp was around 20C outside. I bled using the bleeder screw on the T-Stat. I think i might have a bad ground issue. The temp needle rocks when i have my flasher on, much like an ammeter would. Aux fan might well be a NA thing. I might just wire a switch to t...

Re: Aux Fan

I think the aux fan on non a/c e12s could be a North American thing. I have seen pics of Euro cars sans a/c, and they don't have the extra fan, not even e28s. Given the 530i got factory a/c standard from 1977, and you are likely to be using a/c on a warm day anyway, I guess the window of the aux fan...

Re: Aux Fan

From what you said it sounds like the car has a/c, but didn't come new with factory a/c :?: My understanding is the aux fan is for the a/c condenser, and only comes on when the a/c is turned on. The aux fan's job is to expel heat from the a/c condenser. For the car's cooling system radiator you have...

Re: LS swap

This is an account of a 1975 530i owner, his first car, that mentioned how stable the car was at over 80 mph. :)

First car e12 530i

Here's a You Tube clip of someone doing 100 mph in his 1975 530i automatic :!: 8)

Re: LS swap

One reason BMW liked to mount the M30 far forward was so the weight would pin the nose of the car to the ground at high speed. Many cars get very light in the front end at high speed (over 100 mph). I had the hood off my E12 recently and at 80 mph the front end was getting noticeably lightfooted wi...

LS swap

I came across this article on the Joe Cain LS swapped e12. It looks like a great installation, but there is some misinformation in the article. All aluminum LS motors are around 400 lbs in weight dressed up, an M30 six is around 300 lbs, an old school Chevy small block 350 is 500 lbs, the same weigh...

Re: 1976 530i ECU internal circuit boards view

Hey Mike, Great pics. Good to see the FAQs are still getting used so many years later. Scott Stewart pioneered the conversion; I added the visuals after doing the project myself. Yeah, the E12 ECU is a basically a simple analog computer in a very large box by today's standards. Thank you Robert and...

Re: 1976 530i ECU internal circuit boards view

Great pictures :!: Of course L-jet came out in 1973, so had been going a few years before they reached BMWs. The 1975 US 530i was the first use of L-jet on a BMW. Previously it was D-jet, but only on Euros. 8)

Re: Has anyone ever installed a cruise control mod? If so, what model?

I think back in the day BMW dealers fitted aftermarket Escort units to late e12 528is :?:

Why not raid the factory cruise from the e28 :?: 8)

Re: Cheap flasher unit replacement

Yes the First5 FAQs are still relevant today. Because of them I've checked and cleaned the contacts on the resistor for the fan, and also check if my fuses are getting hot when everything is running and clean the contacts every now and again. These fuses aren't the best design but keep them clean a...

Re: Cheap flasher unit replacement

Thank you for the excellent information Lock. BTW I have had that compressor diode die on me too. Concerning A/C, the condenser fan resistor is worth checking, and so too on very hot days the fuse coming apart from the holder in the fuse box. Concerning the holder there is a FAQ section on this site...

Re: Recreating 1979-81 528i emissions controls?

Good cats, under good conditions will last pretty much indefinitely. The one on my E28 was still working when I sold it with 330K on it and performance was good. Compression is huge in determining HP. Even E28 528i's were up to 183HP with 9.3 instead of 9.0 CR. The 1980 Euro e12 528i had that 9.3:1...

Re: Recreating 1979-81 528i emissions controls?

I got lucky with the '79 528i. I have only two vacuum lines in the engine bay - one from manifold to fuel pressure regulator, and one from manifold to vacuum advance (I bypassed the vacuum thermo valve). And it runs fine with the vacuum retard disconnected, and the throttle body vacuum ports plugge...

Re: Recreating 1979-81 528i emissions controls?

I think you're good then, especially with electronic ignition as long as you don't have to pass smog. The old points and condenser didn't last long before needing replacement, on the m30 in my Bav I would barely make 5K miles. Same with plugs too. BMW went from madness, although it did have good po...
