I have been using the SD508 Sanden unit since 2001, and it seems fine.

Re: It's Alive! It's Alive!

Finally got the old 530i fired up. :D It seems like it was a combination of fuel and ignition problems. The fuel pump had failed internally and I had the timing way off when I swapped out the distributor. I installed a new fuel pump and I bought one of those whistle gizmos that you insert into the ...

Re: 76 530i motor&5spd into a 74 Bavaria?

Yes the carbs would bolt up fine, but there may or may not be provisions on the later head for a mechanical fuel pump. Installing an electric fuel pump would be easy enough, but as cranky as those carbs were I'd just convert the car to FI. The major stumbling block I see is the driveshaft, a Bav ha...

What is capacity for brake/clutch fluid in E12 for complete flush of system. Have had no luck locating this info. Would like to hear what brands of brake fluid others are using. I know dot 4; but any perils of inside info. Thanks All it says in the owners handbook and Haynes manual is to go up to t...

Re: Fuel pump psi?

Doh! My eyesite must be going. :D So that would be 43 psi. I believe generic fuel pumps for carburetor engines would be 3.5 or 5 psi so not sure if that is enough pressure to run a fuel injected motor? Unfortunately the low fuel pressure for a carb engine isn't enough for any injected motor. The ca...

I said 3.0 (three point zero) not 30 (thirty) :!: :D

Re: 1980 Euro 728i

A Euro 728 would have a higher compression 2.8 engine, probably 9:1 instead of the 8.3:1 of a US spec 530i. About the same power but a touch less torque. The euro car might have a hotter cam and would have a different curve on the distributor, and of course would not have come with all the smog equ...

Euro to US might work, but not US to Euro. :?

Re: AC ideas and suggestions

If you have access to R12, stay stock. If you want to use R134a, get a parallel flow condenser, they aren't expensive and the Vintage Air unit mounts easily. A new slimline fan to go with the new condenser would be good too.

Re: Use of the heater

At worst I'd run it with the vent open as I've done often over the years with the blower motor itself off, without any thought of A/C. On the subject of it, I wouldn't worry about not using it for a while, the swashplate compressors are pretty robust and IMO the weak link of the A/C is more the con...

Use of the heater

According to the 1976 owner's handbook you are supposed to use the fresh air fan when the heater is in use. I assume this is so air can blow over the heater core and stop it getting too hot. As I said before, the heater on my 1976 e12 with factory a/c, still works when the a/c is on, if I want it to...
