Removing and remounting the "528i" metal letters on the trunk
OK - I'm almost done restoring (if "done" is a relevant concept . . . ) my 81 528i. Here is one of the smaller issues I'm facing. I want to remove the "528i" emblem (silver metal letters) on my trunk to repair some rust underneath it, and then reattach it. The emblem is in accept...

Driver's floor pan rust and carpet dyeing
In the process of removing my carpet to clean it and dye it, I found that there is significant rust in the driver's floor pan (not sure that is the right term; its the area underneath the driver's feet. I'm assuming I need to have a body shop cut out the rusted area and weld in some fresh metal, but...

Sound proofing
Great to get all the good feedback!!! I have put in a new BMW E28 muffler (center resonator, rear muffler and associated pipes are sold together- $800+ - ouch!!!), as well as a new cat and used e28 exhaust manifolds. So I should have the quietness of a "new"/stock exhaust system. I've also...

Sound proofing
Just put a 3.5 liter engine in my 1981 E12, and find that the engine noise is now louder inside the car. I would like to have it quieter inside the car. Does anyone have experience with adding soundproofing within the engine compartment, on the inside of the firewall, on the floor, etc.? I've seen a...

Just put in a 3.5 engine, how to I quiet loud exhaust?
I've got an '81 528i. Just had my trusted BMW mechanic put in a 3.5 engine, and now the exhaust is too loud for my taste. What are my options for quieting? Right now there is a new catalytic converter (the work was done in California - so I had to include that even though I don't live in California)...

Getting ready to put in an M30B35
I"ve got an 81 528i that I have decided to put an M30B35 in (body, other mechanicals in good shape). I'm going to have my trusty BMW mechanic do it - I'm not knowledgeable about the topic. But those of you out there that have some familiarity with this - how about some "lessons learned&quo...

Rear seats creaking/rattling
I have an 1981 528i (beige interior). I've conquered most of the unwanted squeaks and rattles throughout the car, but there is a creaking sound coming from the back seat. I had the back seat removed (and put back in) by an upholstery shop recently, and I'm wondering if the seat back didn't get put b...

All fixed now
I had my local Chicago old BMW guru look at it. Lenny D (above) is right - two small, trying-to-be-hard-working bulbs.
Thanks to all for your thoughts.

Lights around the HVAC controls don't illuminate
I've got an '81 528i I am restoring. Current focus - the heater controls (left hand selector - AC and amount of heat; center - fan speed, and right - where the air/heat is directed) are usually not illuminating. So when I'm operating the HVAC when it's dark outside, I can't see the controls. Every o...

Current knowledge re putting in a 3.5 liter engine
OK, after tinkering with various performance upgrades (320i intake runners, replacing fuel injectors, etc) I have finally decided to take the leap and put in the bigger Six into my 1981 528i. I have read the FAQ on this (it's amazing how you guys devote so much effort on sharing information - THANK ...

Sway bars
I've got a 1981 528i, and I want to reduce the body roll and improve cornering. I'm thinking sway bars are the place to start. What size should I get, and where do I get them?
