Thanks Falkenberg - luckily (however not conducive to troubleshooting) we've run into a little cooler weather here, I've narrowed my focus on the starter, as I can here it hum when I turn the key.

'80 528i - Cold starts just fine. When temp goes over 90, starting becomes intermittent. No crank, just a click and a hum (potentially from fuel tank). Battery is charged, alternator newish. Usually will start up after 30-60min of "cooling off".

Could it be the starter?

Pressure in the fuel tank ...

My head unit was recently stolen and instead of merely unplugging the unit, whomever stole it cut all the wiring; power, harness, etc. Morning I found the unit gone, vehicle failed to start. Seems to be getting juice, but won't turn over.

Alright.. some time has passed since I installed the new combo relay. Nonstarts became less frequent, but I still get bitten about 1/10 starts. Most of the time after a moderate cool down period after short run (e.g. trip to the store).

Same symptoms: cranks, won't fire. Seems to be getting fuel ...

Combo relay was my first thought - replaced it yesterday. So far, so good.
