I think you're on the right track with the driveshaft. Did you inspect it carefully to see maybe one of the balancing weights came off?
They were usually spot welded to the driveshaft towards the end of the tube.

You're not alone, this one failed with about 3000 miles on it. The metal sleeves appear to be cast? whatever they are they cracked and one that happened the bolts loosen and no longer hold. http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c298/1981E12/528i/DSCF0741.jpg I've also had guibos fail on my Isetta with l...

Re: M30B35 build - oil pump questions

I don't have the credentials to give a definitive answer, however, I'm installing an '84 euro non-cat engine (M30B35?) in the '81 e12 with motronic. I used the e12 2.8 pickup tube with the M30 pump (and e12 oil pan). This way I didn't have to move the pump, only the tube. ...tom Thanks Tom, Just lo...

Production of the M30 spanned 28 years and came in many versions. The differences were mainly displacement but there were others as the engine evolved. The Bxx number many refer to is the displacement... ie B28 = 2.8l engine and B35 = 3.5 litre.

M30B35 build - oil pump questions

I'm trying to assemble the bottom end and get the pan on. I know I need the E12 oil pan so the engine will fit the car. But I have a question about the oil pump and pickup tube. Reading here somewhere it says to bolt the B35 pump body onto the B28 pickup tube. I notice there's a difference in pickup...

Well after much pestering I did finally get my answer. Jeff at IE says they will fit. Today after much waiting my set arrived. http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c298/1981E12/528i/2012_07190012.jpg They fit nice and the ports match up well. I'm pleased with the quality and fit.... http://i29.photobuc...

I'll take a stab at it.... what can you lose at this point. I'm thinking your mechanic doesn't really understand Bosch L-jet injection too well. On the 530i, when the key is turned on to the run position, the combo relay clicks on and feeds power to the resistor bank which in turn feeds through to t...

Well, it's been a few weeks now that I emailed IE and asked for clarification if their headers will fit an E12. The web page says it does but I asked for some confirmation before I pull the trigger. No response back. I can't wait forever on this and want to move forward with the engine build. I'd li...

I think I've seen on IE's website you can get custom forged pistons for something like $800 a set. And you can specify anything you like. Thanks for all the input. I thought I'd ask. I guess bumping up the CR may create problems that out weigh the gains. I plan on running Motronic 1.3 with a Turner ...

I doubt I'd ever turbo the car.... I'm really not a fan of FI. Something about crisp throttle response and the sound of a tuned NA engine I enjoy. I've been looking for data on flow differences on the M30 heads but haven't found any yet. One thing I did learn is there is nice room for improvement by...

My M30 build

I've been working on building a 3.5L M30 for fitment into my 528i. I pulled a M30B35 from my 1991 535i parts car and thought I'd "freshen it up" before doing the swap. Yeah right, don't believe the PO when they say it runs good. The cam was shot along with all the rockers. Con rod bearings...

Will Ireland Engineering headers fit a E12?

Hi all, Currently I'm in the hunting/gathering stage of doing a M30B35 swap into my 1981 528i. Right now for exhaust I have B34 manifolds with custom made down pipes going twin tube to a stock resonator and muffler. It sounds and flows ok but it's a bit flat which is besides the point. As part of th...
