Re: Paging Mike W.

Good to hear. Was worried probably more about the fires around you, as I think we all are learning to deal with being shuttered in. It's basically impossible to stay home and avoid a fire at the same time. Hoping you all stay safe!

Re: 7-digit VIN number??

I haven't used the service, but these folks may be able to help.

Look into the Vehicle Certificate section of the webpage below. This site is BMW affiliated, as I understand it.

Re: Early e12 seat rails - similar chassis to..?

I have a 1975 with the passenger seat out. Definitely a different rail system than the driver side. I'll get some pics later this week.

Full disclosure, this is my opinion based purely on years of hair loss. I could be totally off base.

Someone else may come in here and educate us both.

There are so many factors into what I think could be a realistic response. How many miles a year and how often is it on the road. What kind of conditions? Region, roads, etc. Existing performance condition and expectations. Your method sounds pretty reasonable if the thing isn't falling apart or all...

I hope you realize my response was sarcasm.

If you've been maintaining an E12 'forever', you must be doing something right - likely more like everything right.

This reads like a reply but feels like a painful admission. Thank you for your honesty. Truly, it (and we) will rust and decay and become dust one day anyway. Enjoy it, drive it, keep it driving and comfortable and you've done it and you well. I am sure you have learned a lot. Perhaps the time spent...

The seven years is likely to reduce the liability of the manufacturer.

I'm a bit surprised to hear it's 7 years. My local tire shop won't fix or assist with a tire over 5 years old....

So -- I've seen CabbageFumes mention of the Bilstein HD's - #34-000243, HD(B6) - being required for the pre-76 e12.

I assume I need to add this to my list or is there some magic bean with my suspension swap that will supersede this requirement?

Thanks all...
