Re: 1980 528i “Lucky Find” Project
There will be a lot of things competing for your money, but because you got this car virtually for free you should buy an official blue service manual. They come up on eBay fairly often. I tried to limp along with the Haynes manual when I first bought my E12 and there's no comparison. The Chilton's,...

Aux Fan Bearing Lube
Guys - I've been thinking about how to lube the bearings on my aux fan, which is drawing too much current and roasting my 25A fuse. The plastic around the terminals in the fuse box is shiny, showing that it's been way too hot. The problem I'm trying to solve is how to clean and lubricate the bearing...

BMW p/n 11 42 1 252 343 https://www.ecstuning.com/Search/SiteSearch/11421252343/ You can find them lots of places. There are also some useful articles and videos about the process, particularly achieving proper camshaft position for each valve: https://www.hagerty.com/media/maintenance-and-tech/valv...

Re: Noisy lifter...ticking sound?
Yep that's it. E9, E34, what's a few generations? Still the M30. Hat tip to Lock, who sent this to me during my top-end refresh.

Re: Noisy lifter...ticking sound?
Likely the rocker closest to the firewall. Some mechanics have crimped the oilrail at the midpoint to force better oil distribution - I think you can find that on an E34 board somewhere, if memory serves. I would definitely take out and clean the banjo bolts and rail as Mike describes any time the v...

Re: Valvar 30A Relays // 1 364 986
The new fuse is now green and burnt although it didn’t break. Looks like I need to lube those bearings.

Re: Want to buy - for an earlier engine
I've found it best to search the part numbers on eBay. Most sellers involved with BMWs will provide these. You can then save your searches and have eBay email you when someone posts something that matches your search. Otherwise, the search results can be very noisy, as you're experiencing. eBay is a...

Re: Valvar 30A Relays // 1 364 986
I checked the fuse box and that's when I saw the green fuse. Wait a minute ... green? The aux fan is wired to the 25A fuse at position 17 ... 25A fuses are blue. At least new ones are. Decades-old ones turn green. And get all kinds of crap caked on them. And get loose. And turn 12.8V at 25A into 11....

Re: Valvar 30A Relays // 1 364 986
Lock, terminal 30 is actually 11.4 Volts, which isn't right. The battery is 12.8 V. If I shunt the black wire from the Stage 1 relay connector to the battery (+) the fan comes to life with authority. There's something happening, I suspect you're right and will trace the red/green wire. It looks to h...

Re: Automatic Transmissions?
I have no experience, but Andrew Everett's book on 5- and 6-series restoration says the Borg Warner 65 is "crude but super-reliable" and not expensive to rebuild. The 3HP22 is considered by him to be a better unit, and he recommends upgrading to it if you have a troubled BW 65 or older 3HP...

Re: Valvar 30A Relays // 1 364 986
OK, I have a strange problem that I've isolated to the Stage I relay connector block. The relay tests good. If I use a voltmeter probe I pick up 12 volts between terminal 30 and ground, but if I plug in a jumper (or the relay) the voltage won't turn the fan. The aux fan runs on 12 volts supplied to ...

Jon, it's like you're reading my mind. I just came in from the garage utterly fed up with my light situation.

Re: 1976 BMW 530i "Eleanor" rebuild project
Mike, I've got block envy. It looks incredibly sweet - really nice work. But, seriously, how the hell are you going to move Eleanor when she's not even TKD-level disassembled? Are you a logistical genius, or have a photographic memory or something? I can't remember which screw goes where on a fully ...

Gary, that's a good one from the Land of Oz. It's about the same to get to the lower bolts on the #6 intake runner at the lower plenum on a LHD car for us Yanks. The brake booster makes it cozy, but a long extension and a u-joint are your friends there, too.
