Re: Leather care

I did a 12-day plan, rear seats in the attic, fronts stayed in the car. I hit them repeatedly, massaging in the Leatherique oil, rewrapping in plastic bags, and eventually they got soft. Real soft, in fact. Every day, there would be areas that had absorbed all of the rejuvenating oil and were still ...

Re: A/C Compressor Upgrade

Gents - My AC blows cool-ish, let's say "tepid" - definitely something going on, but not cold. The Haynes manual is really sparse on the AC - a basic diagram of the components and the admonition to get thee to a refrigeration engineer with any questions. So my first hope was that a simple recharge w...

Re: Help with Wheel Bearings

If anyone is following the saga of Der Reparaturanleitung (sounds like a Wagner opera) with any interest, I've allegedly located a physical copy with a dealer in the UK and am working on getting it shipped over the Pond. I looked up E12s on the UK national car registration database, and there were o...

Re: Help with Wheel Bearings

That's undoubtedly my order at Turner .. sooo ... guess it's not coming. The alternative is to manually capture the online version.

Re: Help with Wheel Bearings

Mike, this is a tremendous resource - thanks for posting. The part number for the "repair film" showed up at Turner Motorsport as available ("Reparaturanleitung") with no description, so I don't think you would find it unless you knew German or the part number - $22 with shipping - so I ordered a co...

Re: bilstein reconditioning

Best price I found here in the States was $270 for a pair of the B6 (HD) fronts for the E12, including shipping. That's about $350 Strine. Of course I'm sitting through a 60 day backorder.

If you're dishing trade secrets, I'd love to hear about the hammer and chisel trick. Sounds like we've got some time to kill on this thread ...

Re: Leather care

Does anyone know the color code/name for the red leather available on the E12? Mine is a 1981 528i, and red appears to be a special order. My best guess is 0162 / Cherry. I hit my seats with Leatherique and am going back for another round. They're better, but not where they could be. This reminds me...

Re: Help with Radiator / Water Pump

While we're at it - how did you test your sensor switch? Did you suspend it so just the threads were in water, or was the sensor face contacting the pan? If the latter, you might be measuring the temperature of the pan, and the sensor could switch only at a much higher temperature than spec., so in ...

Re: Help with Radiator / Water Pump

Wow - this is a surprise to me, so I can only imagine how you're feeling! The aux temp sensor is below the outlet of the rad - is it at all possible that there is an occlusion just above the sensor? That wouldn't show up on a flow test. Can you shine a flashlight in the sensor hole and see light thr...

Re: Coolant Temp. sensor

Thanks Mike, that's what I ended up doing. The thought of breaking that thing off made me err on the side of caution. She's all buttoned up and happy. It's nice having a working temp gauge and a functioning bleed screw with a hex head. The engine's running great, and I swear it's smoother. I don't k...

Re: Coolant Temp. sensor

Hello gents: replaced the thermostat, thermostat cover and temp sensor for the dash gauge today. Draining the radiator was a little worrisome, the coolant is very dark in color. I really don't know how long it's been since the last flush, so I'll need to keep an eye on the coolant after it's changed...

Re: Shocks n' Struts

In reply to the comment by our colleague in the Charm City (Eat Bertha's Mussels!) - if you want to spend $37.50 on bolts, you can find the wire-tied stretch bolts at ECS Tuning or Walloth Nesch (Part No 32211113179). They show up on the E9. They're threaded M10 if you just want to buy the Grade 8's.

Re: Shocks n' Struts

Schmiedmann sells the cheaper mount for $80 plus shipping, but may not be able to help with the studs. The official E12 mount on Schmiedmann is about $250. Mesa was cool about hooking me up so of course I bought from them. There are some posts on E8 boards about using the E12 mounts in place of the ...
