Re: Automatic transmission problem

Rich - not sure where you are, but a Getrag 265/6 5 speed just popped up on Vancouver CL:

I assume the asking price is CAD.

Re: Blaupunkt Radio Recommendation

My unit (Blaupunkt Bavaria Reverse C) has a memory wire that I also hooked up to the cigarette lighter. Isn't it awesome that when E12's were designed, along with the hazard lights, the cigarette lighter was considered so indispensible that it always has power? Headlights? Nah - find the key. Want a...

Re: Automatic transmission problem

I don't have a dog in this fight, as my 81 E12 is a 5-speed, but I like your style Lock. Kitchen sinks are made for AT repair.

Re: Blaupunkt Radio Recommendation

My 81 528i came stock with a DAI-9400D head unit, made by Audio Systems Incorporated (ASI) of Japan. These were auto-reverse cassettes but all of their drive bands eventually failed, and direct replacement parts are unavailable. You could find a couple and try to scavenge parts, but most of these un...

Re: No start issue

Gah! I forgot about the lone black wire to the ECU. I bet that's it - yes it seems to be starting normally and then dies, so no signal to the injector is entirely consistent. Body guy was careful not to get the welder close to anything, which was my concern as well. Thanks Lock. Happy Thanksgiving t...

No start issue

Body work done (passenger front wheelhouse). Welder transferred the coil, the ignition control module and the ballast to the new wheelhouse. AFM was removed during work as was the ECM from the glove box. Car acts like it will start but dies. Fuel pressure to the rail is OK. I guess I'll check the gr...

Re: Cheap flasher unit replacement

I'm impressed by this but also I think the AC diode repair-in-the-Fry's-parking-lot is worth an explanation as well.

Re: Exhaust Manifold and Thermal Reactors

Yes, Adika, welcome. BTW, Maybeillbuyit's project posting is in the Gallery, which you'll see on the board index if you back out of the Tech Forum. If you don't go with headers to replace the reactors, you have a couple of options with manifolds. The later E12 528i manifold (single 2" pipe) will wor...

Terrible luck for you! You hardly had time to enjoy driving it. At least it’s autumn!

Sounds and looks great. Thanks for taking the time to make these (and other) posts, too. I've learned so much, it was like an online adult-ed class on E12s. -E

It looks like the pictures Joe posted feature the E21 runners with an elegant bracket for the FPR.

Re: Motronic 1.3 conversion

I think I read that at the fuel rail at 6000 rpm, something like 15 g of fuel per second is consumed, which is less than 20 ml or 2/3 oz. The volume of the whole fuel system from the pump forward is way bigger than that and at 40 psi the delta P should be really small anywhere in the system. Maybe L...

Looks great and I've learned a lot following this project - thanks Lock. That rad tube photo is instructive. I'll be sure to check mine next time I have stuff apart.

Re: Sticky front right brake

I’m curious, would this work?: dismount only the sticky caliper, leaving the free caliper on the rotor to constrain the free piston. Shouldn’t this result in more available system pressure to push on the sticky piston? It should at least provide more time to work the sticky piston out before the fre...

Re: Motronic 1.3 conversion

Nice progress, Lock. I especially like the fuel pressure gauge mounted on the fuel rail - that worked out nicely.
