Re: Whelp...it looks like I may have a spun bearing!

Terrible luck for you! You hardly had time to enjoy driving it. At least it’s autumn!

Re: Motronic 1.3 conversion

Sounds and looks great. Thanks for taking the time to make these (and other) posts, too. I've learned so much, it was like an online adult-ed class on E12s. -E

Re: Motronic 1.3 conversion

It looks like the pictures Joe posted feature the E21 runners with an elegant bracket for the FPR.

Re: Motronic 1.3 conversion

I think I read that at the fuel rail at 6000 rpm, something like 15 g of fuel per second is consumed, which is less than 20 ml or 2/3 oz. The volume of the whole fuel system from the pump forward is way bigger than that and at 40 psi the delta P should be really small anywhere in the system. Maybe L...

Looks great and I've learned a lot following this project - thanks Lock. That rad tube photo is instructive. I'll be sure to check mine next time I have stuff apart.

Re: Sticky front right brake

I’m curious, would this work?: dismount only the sticky caliper, leaving the free caliper on the rotor to constrain the free piston. Shouldn’t this result in more available system pressure to push on the sticky piston? It should at least provide more time to work the sticky piston out before the fre...

Re: Motronic 1.3 conversion

Nice progress, Lock. I especially like the fuel pressure gauge mounted on the fuel rail - that worked out nicely.

Re: We did it: E28 subframe swap...

Nice work! This is a terrific resource - I think there's a guy in Brazil contemplating something similar (i.e. and E28 rear subframe bolt-up) for his E12. The pictures don't appear to have make it, unfortunately. You need to host them elsewhere and link to them. I use this: https://imgbb.com/ It giv...

Re: Throttle body heater hose delete

How many miles on your M30, Lock? The disintegration is probably more of an age thing, but I _think_ a higher-mileage car, where the coolant and it's anti-corrosive payload is circulating more frequently, might fare a little better if the coolant was religiously changed. I worry about mine now. Ah s...

Lock, you should consider building a gallery on the Motronic conversion, something like Dave (maybeillbuyit) did with his rehab.

Re: 1978 530i A/C Oil charge

There are inexpensive injectors (basically cylinders with a short hose and a stopcock) you can attach to the service line through the manifold gauge set. You use these using the low side service port, similar to introducing refrigerant. Sounds like things are well under control.

Re: 1978 530i A/C Oil charge

I have the Bosch 0 140 903 506 axial compressor. The BMW service manual specifically says that the compressor plug should not be removed with refrigerant in the circuit, and that the circuit must be emptied before opening. I took our Bavarian brethren at their word and slavishly complied, so I hones...

Re: 1978 530i A/C Oil charge

Use a fluid transfer cylinder or a syringe with tubing and use the inspection hole. When it dribbles out of the hole, you're done. Keep some rags handy, this can get messy especially if your car isn't on a lift. The total system volume of oil is what's important. The compressor is lubricated by oil ...

Re: 1979 e12 Radiator

I replaced my original radiator (1981, brass) with an aluminum aftermarket unit from Amazon last November. The only thing to be aware of is that the shroud does not fit on the aftermarket radiator. I had to modify my shroud by cutting the bottom, but it did end up working. www.amazon.com/gp/product/...

Re: Output Shaft Removal?

And the one ingredient we so seldom seem to have much of .... patience and time. Squirting penetrating oil repeatedly and over time makes a big difference. But who has time for that ????? I only learned this from necessity - I had only a few seconds a day to obsess over a stuck rusted bolt over the ...
