Re: Distributor "Dwell" Spec.

Maximilian is still around. https://www.bmwmobiletradition-online.com/store/home.php Honestly, there are a ton of options and I usually obsessively search for the cheapest. Rock Auto is reliably inexpensive, and ECS Tuning and Pelican (same company I think) are good. If Summit has the parts, they're...

Re: Hooking up Battery wrong.

Did you turn the key with the battery poles reversed? Without doing so, the ignition circuit remains open so polarity wouldn't matter. Even if closed, I don't think a reversed polarity would permanently damage the coil, points or condenser. I believe that only electronics with diodes are likely to b...

Re: I screwed up...forgot I had drained the coolant!

Patina may be right and there could be water in your gas, especially after a couple of years - add some HEET or other gas treatment for a few tanks to disperse any water, refilling alone probably won't do it. Your first start was using the gas in the lines, so I wouldn't automatically connect the ru...

Re: 77, 78 side mirror glass

Interesting. I bought a replacement door shell with the right P/n for an 81 from Schmiedmann and presumed it would be a perfect copy. It probably is, but I’ll keep this in mind when it comes time to make the swap.

Re: 77, 78 side mirror glass

Hi Mike - curious, how were the 80/81 doors revised?

10ring, here's a pair of NOS chrome E12 mirrors on eBay from Hungary if you want to spend $325:

Re: Stall/cutout under load

Maybe try disconnecting the idle switch on the throttle if you haven't already. If the switch is closed at high RPM the ECU would think you're in coast-down and cut the fuel. Peter's L-Jet FAQ says this feature was added in 79.

Re: Stall/cutout under load

Had similar symptoms with water in the gas. Drove me nuts because everything else looked to be in order.

Re: Idle Adjustments

OK, so I set the idle using the TB screw to around 800 RPM and the AFM mixture screw 2 1/2 turns open. It wasn't happy at all. I connected a small wire to the O2 sensor plug to I could pick a measurement from the sensor using a multimeter. The voltage was consistently falling below 0.5V, indicated a...

Re: Idle Adjustments

This is great stuff, thanks. Last question - is it best that the AFM mixture screw be closed, open, half-open, or does it not really matter if I leave it alone (i.e., constant)?

Re: Idle Adjustments

Thanks Mike. This is helpful. So, is the little air bypass on the AFM just a fudge-factor device? I understand that while the AFM won't measure the small amount of air that the bypass admits, the O2 sensor sees the result at the exhaust end. Can I consider the TB screw as the coarse idle adjust and ...

Idle Adjustments

How many M30 threads worldwide have begun with this subject line? Based on experience, what's the best way to attack the throttle body idle screw and the AFM idle air bypass for the smoothest idle? After confirming the idle switch was closed, my first pass was to adjust the TB screw first to get the...
