Re: Electrical Problem

Hi Cory - Did you check the ballast resistors between the ECU and the starter and in the black/red circuit before the coil? You can do this without energizing the circuit. The green wire goes to the ECU so if the resistors check out, the ECU could be the next place to check if you can swap another o...

Re: Suspension Trouble Shooting

If replacing with Bilstein B6, which have internal bump stops, do you think there any additional benefit to including the aux spring? Here's a link with pictures showing the internals of a Bilstein strut cartridge and the internal bump stops. https://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/blistein-hd-bu...

Re: Suspension Trouble Shooting

When you say "bottoming out" do you mean the undercarriage is scraping the road or do you mean the tires are impacting the fenderwells? Maybe check your ride height to see if it's sagging any. Spec unloaded overall height is 55.9 inches. I just replaced the strut inserts and the (OEM) springs on my ...

Re: zf 3hp 22 transmission oil change.

Hi Gary - your images didn't make it. I think you need to host them off-site. If you don't have an account already, imgbb works great with FF's front-end.

Cheers, and we northern hemisphere dwellers are little envious of your summertime activities!

ZDDP and Oil

Oh yeah I’m going there. Let’s party like it’s 2006 on mye28.com. Looking forward to the summer and reading up on what’s involved in a top end rebuild, should I need one (179K miles, last one at around 98K, tick tock). And then I discover the ZDDP issue and how at least during run-in a ZDDP additive...

Re: Shocks n' Struts

The Bavarian Partmonger Extraordinaire, Jim, at Mesa Performance informed me that the E12 front strut mount (part no. 31331101663) is identical to Part 31331106060 for the 2.5CS-3.0 CSL (04/1971 — 11/1975) and the 2500-3.3Li (08/1968 — 02/1977) with the exception of the length of the locator bolts....

Re: Strange Stall/ No Start - Overheated coil?

I’ve read stories about this happening when oil pump pressure relief valves get stuck closed. The M30B28 pump in my car doesn’t have a relief valve, I don’t think, but E12ers with larger displacement engines that do might have some experience here. I don’t know about the E24 but accessing the oil pu...

Re: Sport Shock Options

The Bilstein mother ship in Ennepetal confirms no plastic ring used on 34-003268 strut inserts: >>>>> Dear Sirs, Thank you for the email and the interest in our products. The note in the mounting instruction is only for a few BMW cartridges with plastic ring. In the delivery of the mentioned strut i...

Re: Sport Shock Options

True that. I received two sets of B6 i from different suppliers this week, and all were missing the plastic ring. Thanks for the heads up, I can get the rings before planning the installation. I wrote to Mr. Ritchie at Bilstein USA/ThyssenKrupp for advice and will post any useful info. Mr Ritchie r...

Re: Sport Shock Options

Also wherever you buy them be sure to ask for the plastic rings that fits around the strut housing. They're used to match the diameter of the bellows to the housing. The instructions say they're included but were absent in both sets I purchased. True that. I received two sets of B6 i from different...

Re: Sport Shock Options

Cory - yes, that was Gary from West Oz who got a quote on a rebuild on Bilsteins, but he was comparing the rebuild cost to the cost of new shocks with the shipping, etc. If there are zero B8's available at any price and Bilstein agrees to rebuild B8s you have, then you may not have much of a choice....

Re: Sport Shock Options

Are the M535i inserts usable with non-M535 stock springs? I was planning on using B6 inserts in the front as well as the rear on stock springs. I think the following will work but let me know if I’m mistaken: B6 Cartridge - 34-003268 B6 Rear Shocks - 24-007306 I can confirm the rear shocks are corre...

Re: Fuel Gauge Problem

Be it hereby noted for posterity that a normally functioning fuel gauge in a 1981 US spec E12 will, upon the key being moved from the run position to off, initially descend, pause, and subsequently nosedive to the below-empty rest position. This behavior is exhibited when stopping a running engine b...

Re: Fuel Gauge Problem

JCat, Haynes shows BR/YE and BR/BK wires from the sender to the cluster. BR ground heads aft to the ground point shared with the tail lights and license plate lights. I can post a video of the fuel gauge after the new radiator is in and I can start her. Probably be after Thanksgiving.
