You know, I never even thought of that, obviously, ha.

Yes, with that in mind, this should not be hard at all.

Thanks for the tip, that should come in quite handy from here on out, on any vehicle.

Battery Drain - Common Causes

Just put in what has to be about the 4th battery in 10 years into my ' 80 528i. In the past there were a few things that were wired improperly. The main source was the Radio. After market, wired hot wrong, bad ground. That has been taken care of but still I have a slight drain. If the car sits 2 wee...

The A/C blower inside the car spins, thats correct. The Auxilliary fan does not. Its easy enough for me to test the compressor and see if thats getting power. If no power, then its off to the parts store once again.

No A/C, where to start?

Ive been going over this 1980 528i and taking care of as much miscellaneous issues as I can. The list is getting short, but with the warmer weather coming, I would like to give the A/C a shot. In a previous thread I was chasing down why my aux fan would not turn on. I have tested the fan and it work...

After changing a few things, and some new radiator fluid I decided to see if I could test this out some in the heat. I have a temp gun and checked both sides of my radiator, and the right side with the sensors is only about 120F, the drivers side was 195F. I had replaced the water pump, thermostat c...

Ok, so after getting underneath this car I was able to bridge the two wires for the sensor together. A little spark and it spins like a champ. I figured testing with my A/C wouldnt be my best choice since I know the A/C doesnt work. Ill leave that for another thread. Its still cool up here in WI, so...

Ok, so I replaced the Aux fan resistor last night. Unfortunately I stripped out ALL the screws holding that thing in place, they were all rusted out bad. Ive yet to test voltages to that resistor, but Im trying to clarify what will trigger this fan. From what Ive read, there are at least 2 things th...

I assume one of the "straggler" relays is the aux fan relay. I yanked both out, and tested them in the horn relay, and both worked as the horn gave a good honk. Next step was to yank off the driver side grill portion to get at that resistor. I sprayed the heavily rusted screws that hold the leads to...

Auxiliary fan resistor

I realized when looking at my car that I do not believe that the Auxiliary fan has ever worked on this car (80 528i). Ive done a few tests to see if it would turn on normally, whether through hot coolant temps or with the AC, neither make it turn on. The fan spins by touch. But, the connectors going...

Ok, well check this out, add it to the list of causes of crappy starting, then point fingers and laugh! I looked through the schematics Peter talked about and somewheres either in there, or somewhere else I read that the bosch connectors going to the sensors located on the thermostat housing need to...

I wish bavauto had a way I could get a listing online of the items Ive purchased for this car. But, just by looking quick at the price tag of that sensor, Id be willing to bet I bought all of them but that one when I changed out the thermostat housing. Ill test that thing out tomorrow, but, I also l...

Simple fuel pump question

Of all the cars I remember having in my time, when the key is put to the "on" position (not the start position), the fuel pump engages and pressurizes the line. Tell me this also holds true for an '80 528i. If youve followed any of my previous threads, Ive been trying to track down a starting proble...

No better time than now to test out the cold start valve, since its 45F outside here in WI. Pulled the cold start valve, and wrapped the end in paper towel so that if it did spray, I could easily see it. Nothing, not a drop. While I go through the book to diagnose whats up with that, feel free to ad...

Update: So, after thinking some more of this out, I considered that the Fuel pump may have been bad. I was going to test it, but didnt have the correct connector to do it at the time. So, after more thinking, I figured it cannot hurt to purchase another Fuel Pump and give it a try. New fuel pump ins...

Yep, it takes a bunch of turns to get started, then once it pops over, it will die. Do that a few times, then it will run steady. I checked the oil for a gas smell, and it kinda smells gassy, but not really too bad. But, then heres another symtom that can also lead me to bad injectors. Once the car ...
