Re: Fuel Gauge Problem
JCat, Haynes shows BR/YE and BR/BK wires from the sender to the cluster. BR ground heads aft to the ground point shared with the tail lights and license plate lights. I can post a video of the fuel gauge after the new radiator is in and I can start her. Probably be after Thanksgiving.

Re: Fuel Gauge Problem
Hey JCat - You have angered the German car gods. Repent. As you know, the sender is a variable resistor that works through the ground. IIRC there are three brown wires at the sender, two with stripes (black and yellow I think) for the gauge itself and the reserve light, and the plain brown to the gr...

Hi Gary - your photo didn't make it, at least not on my computer, but maybe page 61-13 will help:

Re: A/C Compressor Upgrade
For posterity, I'm posting research results here. For the Bosch swashplate (or "axial") compressor, the fill capacity of 350 ml appears to be correct for the entire system, flushed. If only the compressor is removed and drained for whatever reason, the reservoir drain bolts on the compress...

Re: A/C Compressor Upgrade
My AC system has had the refrigerant recovered, and I removed the compressor (Bosch 0140 903 506) which seems okay. After a flush (assuming no surprises) and some new hoses, I'm planning on using ester oil to maintain R12/R134a refrigerant compatibility. Any reason not to? The compressor has a label...

Re: E28 drive shaft compatibility
Hi Robert- I don't know about your driveshaft issue, but I learned while buying strut mounts that BMW sometimes gives different part numbers to virtually identical parts. Jim Stansfield at Mesa Performance hooked me up and might be someone who could help you. Full disclosure, I haven't yet actually ...

Re: " Ended" sources for finding parts NLA.
Very satisfying, Cory. I've also set up Google Alerts as well as eBay alerts for many of the NLA part numbers I want. When something new gets added to their indexes, you receive an automated email and can jump on it. Sometimes it's in Greece or Latvia, but even a long delivery time is better than ne...

Re: Dexron II ATF
Correct, Robert, for the PS. Thanks for the message on Dex/Merc. I found some other boards where E28 guys were running either Dexron VI or Dex/Merc with no problems, so I grabbed some Dexron VI at a local shop and topped off the reservoir. I'll report back if anything melts, burns, squeals or smells...

Dexron II ATF
The owner's manual specifies Dexron II D20 ATF, which is of course long gone. Is it preferable to use Dexron VI currently on the shelf of the Dex/Merc formulation which is supposed to be the equivalent of Dexron III? I understand there are viscosity differences, but that may not matter as much as th...

Re: A/C Compressor Upgrade
Well, I decided that, based on the other things done to the car by the PO, there was only a minimal chance that he had converted to R134a and left all of the original R12 hoses and fittings. I can't be 100% sure, but the drier looks original. The system was blowing about 70 degrees from the top ven...

Re: A/C Compressor Upgrade
Good to know about the R12, I was considering doing the same conversion to R134 and a parallel condenser. If you switched to the parallel condenser, how were you going to mount it to the car? And the fan to the condenser? The stock unit has the brackets spot welded to the condenser frame. Rob Siege...

Re: '80 528i Fuel Sender float wires
I'd say you nailed it. Can you confirm that you used 80/20 nichrome? The resistivity varies by alloy, but 80/20 is the most common. Also, did you use stranded or drawn? I coaxed new life back in my sender with a thorough cleaning, but remember being shocked at how expensive they are new. With this i...

Re: 1980 528i Speaker replacements
Alpine SPS-406 coaxial 2-way speakers will fit in the rear deck. I found some on eBay for about $50. They don't come with grilles and may ride too high for the OEM ones, so you'll need to work around that. I found some E28 covers for a Blaupunkt speaker that fit nicely and looks period. Good luck!

There are aerosol coatings that might work where dyes don't. I have no experience with them but a company called SEM makes one.
