Re: Electrical Problem
Thanks for the replies! So I've now learned what a ballast resistor is and what is does. Thanks Google and Hack Mechanic! This is what autoblog lists as the first symptom of a failed ballast resistor: "The most obvious symptoms will be the vehicle starts, but then immediately dies as soon as yo...

Electrical Problem
So I have the first electrical problem with the E12 ('77 530i) and hope the collective wisdom here can help. I've searched the board and can't find a post for the same problem. My starter got unreliable. It would work fine for a while and then not. The solenoid would click but the starter would not ...

Re: Sport Shock Options
In planning for the rebuild of my front shocks I realized that it will be a major pain to keep the E12 stationary for an undetermined period time while Bilstein works their magic. I don't need to drive the car, just move it around in the shop. Best idea I can come up with is to find a set of junk sh...

Re: Sport Shock Options
Thanks to everyone for the great information. I just ordered the rear B8s that Bav Auto says will fit an E12, and will be contacting Bilstein about rebuilding the front shocks. Regarding the rear B8s from Bav Auto, they are the only seller that lists that shock (24-008198) as a fit for E12s. The Bil...

Re: Sport Shock Options
That answer is way off base. The B6's will work in the front where the spring is "captive on the strut. But the rear is a different breed of cat. The difference between a B6 and B8 shock is the length of the stroke of the shock shaft. The problem with the B6 is the stroke is longer and allows ...

Re: Sport Shock Options
The part # on the M535i box is A 31 32 1 124930. Here's the link: https://www.wallothnesch.com/en/catalogsearch/result/?order=name&dir=asc&q=a31321124930 Interesting. That is a superseded BMW factory part number (minus the "A"). Googling "Bilstein A 31 32 1 124930" retur...

Re: Sport Shock Options
I'm using the M535i inserts with H&R springs that are about 1.5" lower. Here's the response from Bilstein and feel free to email or call them, maybe they'll get the message to bring back the B8. They're saying the B6's are for stock springs but will also work with lowered suspensions. I al...

Sport Shock Options
It seems that the remaining supply of new front Bilstein B8s for E12s has dried up. Wish I would have bought a set a few months ago when I read Siegel's Roundel column describing how hard is was to find front B8s for his early E24. So what do we do for lowered suspension? My car came with lowering s...

Re: now it's the starter....
Its easy peas to get the starter out if you ask me. Go check the tool box in the trunk, the bent wrench you are after is in there. Its two nuts on the starter to get it out, that wrench will reach both. sure its tight, and you can only get maybe a 1/4 turn each time, but once the nuts are started o...

now it's the starter....
Went to drive the car after fixing the most recent fuel leak (see "ANOTHER leaking injector" thread) and now it won't turn over. Battery is charged. I can hear the starter solenoid click but the starter doesn't move, so it seems like the starter has failed. Thinking about changing the star...

Re: ANOTHER injector leaking
Thanks again for all the helpful responses. Finally got everything put back together last night with the extra clamp on the leaking injector hose. Ran the car for approx 5-8 minutes - no leak!

ANOTHER injector leaking
I'm getting a little frustrated with the E12. Spending more time working on it than driving it is getting old. As soon as I got the cooling system put back together there were several new fuel leaks. I cured all but one by tightening the clamps where the fuel rail connects to each short injector hos...
