Re: 1980 528i “Lucky Find” Project
You will need proof the blue plates were originally on your car, either a pink slip or registration card will do, don’t expect the DMV clerk to know how to do it, ask for a supervisor. And you need both plates.

Re: Speedo cable drive oring replacement
On earlier cars like 2002 and e9 the housing is fiber and that little bushing fits up inside. It is a metal can with a spring and rubber seal. It needs to be pried out, destroying it in the process if needed. The fiber housings had a tiny hole next to this bushing, I’ve used a small drill to destroy...

Check how tight the strut nut is before removing the struts.

Re: 1975 BMW 530i - Clunking Noise from Front Right
My car clunked only when turning right, it was the tie rod end on that side. There was no other evidence of wandering either. I would also check tightness of the strut insert nut, pretty common issue.

Re: e12 temperature question
Does the fan spin freely with engine off or is it seized? If seized it’s cooling when it doesn’t need to.

Re: Water Pump Type?
It is not a ‘spin on’ with the large single nut, it is the earlier ‘bolt on’ which mounts to a riser/nose piece, I can see the small mounting bolt in front of the fan.

Re: Ignition Tumbler
Removing the whole lock cylinder would have been easier but I was determined. I also dremeled gently the upper edges of the plastic ignition switch. Drilling or chiseling five safety bolts does nothing to provide more room for the ignition switch itself. Great write-up.

Re: Ignition Tumbler
Well, you don’t have to drill or chisel the safety bolts, the lock housing is part of the upper cover anyway. When I got the electrical switch out I broke it. So I dremeled out all of the webbing in the upper cover to get a new one in. Then I had trouble getting the tumbler into the housing. After s...
