Topic: pumping brakes increases idle

It's normal. By pumping the brakes, which are vacuum assist, more air is introduced into the system. At least on 528i's, with the oxygen sensor constantly correcting the mixture, it then injects more fuel to compensate for more air. So if the idle goes up, it means everything is working correctly.

The one pictured looks more like a 530i one, not a 528i one, which is better and has a much larger aux fan mounted on it. The 528i one has flat tubes, not round, and is a serpentine design. A much better condenser IMHO. The Aux fan mounted in front is critical too, and while it looks the same as oth...

I doubt there would be much gained, but if you really want a CAI, at least on a budget price, I'd look at adapting one off an E28. It has a hose leading to the cover in back of the headlights, so it's drawing air from up front. Nice in theory, but like I said, I don't think anything to speak of woul...

Mine has the same problem, most of the time. Brake lights too. But not always. It's not a relay since I can go weeks without starting and it fires right up. I suspect the igniton switch, but haven't found time to chase it down yet. I'm guessing you have another drain, besides the switch just being o...

I suspect 80-81 would work as they seem to have the same sunroof design as E28s. 77 (or was it 78) thru 79 might work, but they have the sunroof drive in the trunk, unlike under the headliner like 80-81. Early slide only I doubt would work. I will add, I haven't tried any of the above, I like the st...

It's the carbs, not the distributor or timing. Having put over 100K on Bavs, I got to know them well. I found I could either eliminate the flat spot but very shortly end up with a very iffy idle, or have a decent idle and a flat spot. Later carbs may (or may not) be better, but I had a pair of 69 an...

Yes, but in my experience the WOT (wide open throttle) isn't really that important, it doesn't seem to make much difference. If you can pop the cover off, and I think you can on those, clean it up as Peter mentioned, but don't sweat it if you can't.

The wiring and connectors are the same with Mid E12 (78-79), late E12, E28 and E21, and probably more thru that era. The E28 one will have included in the harness the window and door lock too. An additional note on the wiring, it changes color under the dash, so at least one of the colors isn't the ...

For future reference... It shouldn't be, but it has happened to me that I flooded it one time in cold weather. Anyway, if you even suspect it might be flooded, and it's unlikely, but possible, unplug the ECU in the glove compartment, with the key off of course. Then try and start it. If it's flooded...

Welding them isn't a good idea. It's spring steel, so it would require a special alloy to weld it with, then retempering it to restore it to original specs. Which may or may not be above the melting temp of the aluminium bracket it's riveted to. However, the late E12s and E28's seemed to have used t...

I seem to be the only one, but I'll throw this one out as I've had it on 3 different BMWs. How is the alignment on the back of the sunroof? Often it seems low, and even with good working sunroof drains, you can get a puddle in the rear footwell. You pour water in to test it with the sunroof open and...

Typically 2 to 3 complete open turns is close. But when I had a less than perfect FPR, I had it open much further than that, regardless, it only really affects idle mixture IF it's not running closed loop, otherwise the O2 corrects the mixture to the ideal setting.

Always check the oxygen sensor readings first. I harp, but it is such an essential tool, along with being an input. If it shows a rich reading, I'd first look at the FPR, next AFM. If it has no reading, I'd change it, the O2 sensor itself will cause it to run rich, but if it's working, it can self c...

That would just mean I would need the l-jet injectors and fuel rail right? Shouldn't be too much trouble, I would probably need the same if I keep the original gearbox anyway Well, the upper timing cover and distributor too, it's all tied into one on motronic, but it's not a big deal. Actually the ...

Cool! How long did it take for that stuff to clean up the rust on your calipers? And since you dislike yellow, is red a better caliper paint? A word of caution, most VHT paint I've seen seems to be flat. It does hold up well to high temps, but might get kind of dirty and be hard to clean aroun...
