Chris, Yeah, the 528i resistor pack that attaches to the right fender was definitely a change from the 530i. Unfortunately, I can't quite remember what the original 530i resistor wire actually looked like. However, I saved everything and might be able to look in that box if you really end up being s...

A few things to add: 1. The two formed heater hoses that go to the firewall should be the same between 530i and 528i. 2. The coolant return pipe is slightly different between 77 530i and 80-81 528i. Only different is the little barb location. On the 528i, it points up and a ?-marked shaped hose conn...

E28 flywheel interchange?

One of these questions that can really only be fielded by someone with multiple BMWs. Would an E28-era flywheel work with the E12? I'm guessing it might just have extra sensors. New availability of either looks iffy.

I use Redline MTL. It makes a noticeable difference for smoother shifts from
1st to 2nd in cold weather.

FWIW, I think that box you guys are referring to is the "speed switch" and you can see where it fits in with the rest of the emission stuff in the FAQ: http://www.firstfives.org/faq/ljet/lambda530i.html It basically sits right next to the 530i combo relay on the inside driver fender. I ran...

I went through both front doors on a 1977 530i over the last year or so. A few scattered pictures are here from dealing with NLA or wrong parts from BMW; I think I have more elsewhere. https://www.flickr.com/photos/robertbondi/sets/72157633228601585/ To get to that brush, you'll be taking off the in...

I made a pretty thorough post on this topic last year. Replies at the time got bogged down on the function of an alternator rather than the support bracket itself.

Mike, No problem on current configuration. I was just researching 3.5L upgrade details. I've run across compressing the 2.5 bar FPR as a hack for higher fuel pressure in multiple locations. I'm also aware there's a 3 bar version of the Bosch regulator as another option. I haven't, but if you're remo...

adjustable fuel press regulators

Anyone using one with opinions? BavAuto used to sell ones I think made by Malpassi. Bosch also makes some, but I haven't sorted out all the P/Ns; stock mounting at the 528i fuel rail location probably also gets to be trickier; best bet there is likely an adapter.

The chassis harness and engine harness come together with separate plugs at the combination relay, so that seems like a good place to look.

It's light on pictures, but this FAQ gets close to the subject as there's a slight
difference between late 528i and the 530i at the combo relay.

Re: what is supposed to be here?

That raised boss region where #8 (stud) is going is basically a legacy in the casting for mounting a mechanical fuel pump on the early M30s. If that hole is blind (does not penetrate cyl head wall), you could just leave it. Otherwise, use a short bolt and seal it up. Our cyl head FAQ might say a lit...

Yeah, no doubt the 265 was on some of the early E24s. I ran across a nice general FAQ on the E9 site: http://www.e9coupe.com/tech/5speed/prep.html Back in the day, other BMWs used to come to FF for information. I guess the tables have turned. We're scratching out maybe a post a day when we're busy?

transmission input seal leak

Post bump. I replaced the front input seal again on the Getrag 265 last summer. That was good for about 2000 miles and the Redline MTL drip is back. From a conversation with an ex-BMW mechanic on this, he stressed the importance of using an anaerobic sealant and slightly shortening the tension sprin...
