Hood light install

Stuck at home, for the fun of it I installed the Euro style under hood light. The cutouts and wiring is all present. I believe the factory hood light is the same as the trunk light, I used a spare license plate light. Ran a cable pair from the cutout on the upper drivers' side through the frame to t...

Interior e28 twin light upgrade

I have a sunroof with one interior light on the drivers side and it doesn't illuminate well, especially on the passenger side. The plastic was also cracked and crumbling. The light is held in by a stamped assembly in the frame, and e28s have lights on each side, so I wondered if there was the same h...

Re: side mirrors

The e30 mirrors are the same too and more common, I used one for a replacement on the passenger side. You can also pop the mirror glass out and replace the motors easily, even the plugs are the same. For the late model e12 mirrors, at least. Some cars (like mine) also have a mirror defrost element w...

Re: Headlight R + R

Gary, I'm not sure what you have in Oz. We yanks can buy conversion kits that fit into the original buckets: http://www.myhellalights.com/index.php/products/auxiliary-lamps/sealed-beam-conversion-headlamps/vision-plus-5-75in-conversion-headlamp Lock has done this conversion. Evidently there are ele...

Re: e28 power seats?

Thanks Mike. You inspired me to look into the issue, and found a good part. I was thinking I'd need to open up the chair - turns out it's an external adapter mounted to the support. I'm going to get this and see how it goes. This and cruise control would be perfect. https://e28goodies.com/product/se...

Re: 1976 BMW 530i "Eleanor" rebuild project

I wanted to say thank you Mike. I'm rebuilding an m30 b34/b35 hybrid and I'm a little behind you - but it's been invaluable to see the internal parts and hear your story before I open things up on my engines. And also that you inspired me to build my own camshaft removal tool. I considered asking to...

Re: e28 power seats?

What kind of seats, comforts or Recaros? If it's the comforts, E28 armrests can be easily added as they appear similar to US spec seats. These are just e34 comforts. Do you mean that the armrest mechanism from them will mechanically fit into the e12 seats already, or rather that they will fit with ...

Re: fuel pump/filter assembly

I've done that, moved the filter to the front left by the battery, it's easier to change and doesn't get too hot. I don't like the tangle of lines running every which way by the pump, it feels like an afterthrought on a chassis designed for a carburettor. There's a F5 FAQ on fuel hoses and you're su...

Re: e28 power seats?

I can add that I tried to install e34 seats into my '79, using a mye28 guide for e34s into e28. But there's two problems with e28/e34 seats in the e12. One, any chassis before 1980 has a different base with a raised beam in the middle (the e28 floor beneath seat is flat) so the seat base won't sit i...

Re: alternator bushing

Yes that AC belt is a real pain. When I want it off (once a year or so), I just cut it, and I buy a couple at a time. It's really not worth the frustration of saving a $7 belt. The best way I found as Eric mentioned, is get it started and then use a tiny C clamp to hold it on the harmonic balancer, ...

Re: Early E24 part interchange

My reservoir cracked and I bought an e24 reservoir as they are easier to find, and it came with the hole so I then bought the sensor and plugged it up. It's held just fine for a few years now. The sensor circuit is wired back to front to what I would expect (designed to work with the "check&quo...

Re: auto to manual conversion/swap FAQ

I did this a couple of years ago, take a look http://firstfives.org/phpBB-3.2.1/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=5359 I used a 260, not 265, but the idea is the same. You don't need a new under-dash cover, you can just carefully cut out the clutch pedal gap. Pretty sure the revese light cable goes into the fi...

Re: Valvar 30A Relays // 1 364 986

Great catch on the fuse. I'm still running the original fuses because they 'look' ok but should probably replace them. I have at least replaced the relays. I thought it might be a long shot, but I have seen that before - voltage looks ok, but then drops to not enough under load due to resistance. I ...

Re: Valvar 30A Relays // 1 364 986

That is weird. When you measure the voltage on each side of the relay when it turns on, do you get 12v on both sides? Wondering if there's some high resistance somewhere, so you're seeing 12v, but put it under load and the voltage drops down, lower than can drive the fan. Might also be worth checkin...

Re: Squeak in Rear Suspension

True and I'm glad you didn't have to resort to dropping everything because that's a massive case of "while you're there...". But thinking about it, the urethane would be holding the subframe so rigidly, that central point wouldn't really be taking much stress or make noticeable difference ...
