How much side to side wobble ,if any, should there be in the distributor shaft? Looks like side to side movement would play havoc with the point gap???? I believe there should be some up and down movement of the shaft but not excessive.

I just reread the distributor removal and installation procedure in the manual I must have been thinking of the dist install on my TR3 in my last post. I'll swap in the Peronix unit and see what happens. I'll order points and condensor for the other unit. I'll post the result.

Well I'm not getting spark at the plugs and i am running points and condensor. I'll have a look at the points to see if they are pitted. Maybe I can clean them up with some 1000 grit paper. what are the signs if this switch fails or is failing in terms of hard starting?

Is there a simple way to test a combo relay? Are they even available for a 530i? Where is the best place to buy one. I've read the Faq in the Tech forum about soldering the contact points.
