No, you should not hear the fuel pump run, it is only turned on when either the car is running or the key is turned to start, not acc, not on, but start. There is supposed to be a check valve in the fuel pump to hold pressure, so that could be the problem, but I doubt it. I would go the other way, w...

For the record, pic of a cracked head (dial up beware)

This is just for future reference, but I got to looking at the head that came off the original 2.8 in my E12 and thought I'd document it thru a picture. Best I've taken so far of a crack in the head. Being an 80, it's the intermediate vintage, which is supposed to be relatively good, it's got thicke...

Yep, AFM would be my first guess, but nothing more than an educated guess. I will tell you it's not the plugs. I think the heat range is off by one, but that would have such a minor effect on things it's not worth worrying about. Silvers were spec'd, and will last longer, but I've gotten 25K or more...

I meant, you don't want to see mine.
That's the why for the fence.
Believe it or not, there's more behind it.
You're right I don't want to see it, it make me jealous  Looks good from here...

Being as you have a 530i, that adjustment screw does do something, but only at idle. 528is are kind of self correcting with the O2 sensor, but 530s just use the base inputs without any correction. Anyway, on to adjusting it, when I had L-jet basic on a Bav, I would screw it in as much as I could and...

Compared to my E28 eta, running temps, per the IR "gun", are within 5 degrees F of each other, although my ETA gauge runs left of center and the E12, now, just right of center. That suggests to me things are ok. I'm satisfied with the temp readings from the "gun" and think that ...

Motronic is better, but not a huge improvement. Contrary to popular opinion, it will not get you more power, but it will get you a different torque curve, a smoother running engine and slightly better gas mileage. If it works out easy, great, but you need a motronic specific bellhousing and flywheel...

Overwhelmingly, the two reasons why engines die is because of lack of oil, and over heating. X2. Absolutely. Rarely does an M30 wear out, but they don't like being run out of oil or overheated. I've had a couple of recores in cars I've bought and had very good luck with them. I've also priced them ...

Be careful. I don't know what the pressure temp chart for EZ chill is, but overcharging will make it warmer, not cooler. On 12 or 134a, you probably don't want much more than about 30PSI, 35 might already be too high. If you're using a blend on top of 134a, no telling what the pressure should be, al...

You called it, an impact wrench. It may seem counter intuitive, but you can hold the pulley against an impact wrench, it hits it hard and often, but doesn't impart much rotation. Use a rag maybe, but you can hold it. Now if you don't have an impact, I'd try using a box end wrench and hitting it with...

This is an easy one. There is a counter box mounted on the frame, somewhere down by the steering box. It has two buttons on it. Push both of them, twice, to reset it. It's solely a mechanical counter stuck in the middle of the speedometer cable and is supposed to go off at about a 25K interval. But ...

Leave it where it's at, the worst that can happen is it will idle too fast and you can adjust it then.

About bad water pumps. I have seen, not on a BMW, but a 47 Cadillac, where the impeller came loose from the shaft so it was barely turning and not pumping water. And later BMW's, as in E39 or so and newer, use plastic impellers that can break apart. But I've never seen one of them on a M30 engine. S...

Swapping the head won't fix it. Now if you had two dead cylinders, it could be a problem, but just low wouldn't cause a rev-limited like problem. It might run a little better, but you're not going to have a great big difference. How is power up until it hits the wall? Very good, or a slug or what? I...
