Re: windscreen install - FAQ needed

I'll be replacing the gaskets on both the windshield and rear glass. I'll obviously, take pictures as part of my Eleanor rebuild. It's going to be one of my projects in the very near future.

Re: Driveshaft center hanger bearing and bracket?

For god's sake, stay away from URO!!!

I have always had problems with their parts. Either they fail way too early, or the part doesn't line up like it should. Every time I gave them a chance, I got burned.

You know the saying, "you get what you pay for."

Re: 1980 528i “Lucky Find” Project

It appears that the air filter was not installed correctly. I am noting the bracket that holds on the lower portion of the air box appears bent upwards. You should check that and simply bend it back into place if it is bent.

Re: front fender rust - near sill.

Gary, You might have another option: if you didn't want to cut out the rusty sections (after cleaning, of course), you could use lead as a body filler instead of fiberglass or bondo. The distinction with lead is that it's not just a filler, but it contributes to the structure of the piece, effective...

Re: 1976 BMW 530i "Eleanor" rebuild project

Eric, you always make me laugh  However, my two-post lift will be a commercial solution...I'm not THAT brave! Lock, not a problem! I'm glad people are able to take something away from my project...that's why I'm documenting this in the first place. The "Iron Maiden" that you fabricate...

Re: Valve clearance gap?

If I can offer an additional suggestion: Not aware if everyone here knows about ZDDP additives to motor oil. The elevator speech is that ZDDP additives assist flat tappets (our engines) by creating a thin anti-wear surface on metal parts that come in direct contact with one another. Essentially, the...

Re: 1976 BMW 530i "Eleanor" rebuild project

Checking back in, now that we are "kind of" settled into our new house. Eleanor is still at the old house's garage, mainly because the garage at the new place isn't big enough  I'm thinking of keeping her over there even when she is finished, because I can't stand the thought of park...

Re: paint codes

Gary, all, Here's another great website to use your paint code to match up to which vendor carries that exact paint code: https://paintref.com/cgi-bin/colorcodedisplay.cgi?make=BMW For example, when I look up Eleanor's color (Pastel blue) for 1976, it tells me that Ditzler PPG and Dupont are the onl...

Re: Valve cover gasket?

Karl, Just the ol' plain torque seal is needed  Mike is correct with using gasket sealer on the front, where the head and front timing cover meet on the metal surface (below the gasket itself). To use, just put a small dab on, press it down a bit, but let it then sit for 5-10 minutes to begin ...

Re: Noisy lifter...ticking sound?

Mike What did you do to put more load on the oil pressure spring to increase oiling at idle? Karl Karl, Take a look at my Eleanor rebuild thread, specifically post: https://www.firstfives.org/phpBB-3.2.1/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=5839&start=75#p31987 Here's a pic from that rebuild post, I'...

Re: 7-digit VIN number??

Sunshine, When you go to register, expect to require police verification. 7-digit VINs just don't exist anymore. For me, I just called my state police precinct, and a while later, a couple police came and inspected my car. You probably already know this, but our VINs are stamped on the passenger-sid...

Re: Noisy lifter...ticking sound?

Karl, If you remove both banjo bolts, you'll see the camshaft directly underneath, and the feed oil channel drilled in from the side. Both of these oil channels are one-way, and the nozzles in the oiler bar are the only way for oil to escape this one-way passage (aside from the lubrication the camsh...

Re: 1976 BMW 530i "Eleanor" rebuild project

I had to post this addendum, as Eric ("528i-1981") informed me of a brilliant mod I had never heard of before; the "dual-channel oil spray bar" (DCOSB) mod. One of the...deficiencies of our engines is that the valvetrain oil spray bar at idle doesn't necessarily spray sufficient ...

Re: Noisy lifter...ticking sound?

You're welcome Eric :)

Here's the modification to the oil bar in question. The guy also put photos in the writeup to show exactly how to do this.

http://www.e9coupe.com/tech/spray_bar_fix/70590.html

....I'm going to do this myself! Thank you Eric for the heads-up!
