Funny you mention that Ron, went and bought one pressure bleeder from Harbor Freight and worked like crap! Caused me more time than using the pedal to flush out the fluid/air. Needless to say I took back the $25 piece of junk LOL. Btw noticeable difference after replacing that flex disc...much bette...

Would not have guessed that about the spring being a ground hmm, Ron, I have done most of the thing you suggested about 5 years ago. Anyway have put it all back together and all went on easier than it came off. Just kept the servo as I found it without the filter. Seems to work fine as before so not...

Decided the only way I was getting to it was to remove the brake booster. Thanks Ron Dwyer! Removed and as you can see in pretty bad shape. Not so sure I didn't rip it up further removing those old lock nuts, anyway it's done and I'm getting ready to install the new one. While waiting for the part I...

I was hoping to avoid removing the master cylinder and brake booster. I'm thinking I may have to have it done from underneath up on a lift. I tried it on my back but had no luck.

The part is still available $22.95 at Bav Auto.

Steering Column U Joint

Hello E12 Gurus', Seeking help/advice on how to remove replace one of these. Aka flex disc in the steering column. It's in a real tight spot (under brake booster) and my first attempt failed. Couldn't even loosen one of the four nuts. Tried from above and below, with open end or closed wrenches and ...

Update

Well I decided to just clean up the bearings as you suggested Mike and I think it will be good for a little while longer until I need shocks and go into the strut to do a total rehab (coil pads and mounts). Saved me a good $400-500 for now. My severe pull left did turn out to be the bad center drag ...

Great I think I will try that after all as I have been inspecting it further and feel it would be more work, especially getting that top lock nut off, than it's worth. Even the coil pads that I thought looked bad were only dried up on the edges, still pretty solid under the springs, for a while anyw...

So should the mount spin freely? As I mentioned it hangs up on the top plate but eventually you can spin it around. Doesn't seem to be bad but never had this apart before to know. I have purchased coil compressors so I guess I need to get in there further to find out. If bad should I replace both or...

Yeah that's the next step.
Bearings really don't seem as smooth as they could be I suppose. Thanks for input.

Took the strut housing off tonight and turns out would have been easier with tie rods connected for support, just learning along the way. For putting back on may be easier as you have the chassis for support when tightening. So I have it off on the bench and and not really noticing any obvious probl...

Yes you're right but do you think it's easier to have the tie rods connected to remove the strut housing, as it is my first attempt myself to do so, does it make any difference?

Front End Questions

Hello All, I have been trying to figure out the cause of a pull left after turning left and being aware of a left front strut popping noise, mostly when turning slow like pulling in driveway and even when pressing down on the fender when parked, I discovered that the center link post going into the ...

Connect or not connect?

I have an '81 and have been going back and forth connecting, disconnecting the vacuum retard for a long time trying to figure out the reasoning behind it all. Recently replaced the idle control valve( ICV on valve cover) and noticed a big difference in cold start up ( much better ) when retard hose ...

I decided to dismantle the throttle switch assembly yesterday and was a bit of a pita with all the small screws/nuts, lucky I remembered to put a rag under it all to catch what I drop. I managed to get to behind the shaft circlip and washer where there is a plastic bushing. It looked a little worn b...

I decided to try another vacuum test with some carb cleaner and did find a point where the rpm"s increased. It was at the throttle switch shaft. it would only happen when you spray directly at the throttle shaft..not from a 90 degree angle. Is this normal or should I take apart the throttle swi...
