Re: Hood light install

Always wondered about that spare wire by the carbon canister. Nice clean work as always, Lock. The only downside is having the light on all the time when the hood is up. A simple timer inline would solve that if it became an issue.

Re: Headlight R + R

Inspired by this thread, and while cleaning out my parts stash, I came upon the original fog light lenses. I replaced them shortly after buying the car with URO lenses, which were cheap and clear, as one of the Bosch lenses was badly hazed. https://i.ibb.co/s5jkJQB/Before.jpg The one on the left had...

Re: M90 Part throttle hesitation

Lock was having power loss symptoms with his L-jet under various load conditions. His solution was replacing it with Motronic! Hopefully someone else can come up with something to help you. The only other thing I can think of would be the AFM vane, but you've replaced the AFM (and assume from your t...

Re: M90 Part throttle hesitation

First off, really nice car dude. It does suggest a vacuum leak to me, also. Did you check for leaks around the intake runners? The lower plenum is easy to miss with the starter fluid test. I assume you've carefully checked the AFM boot that connects to the throttle body. Cracks in the bellows can ca...

Re: Headlight R + R

Gary, I'm not sure what you have in Oz. We yanks can buy conversion kits that fit into the original buckets: http://www.myhellalights.com/index.php/products/auxiliary-lamps/sealed-beam-conversion-headlamps/vision-plus-5-75in-conversion-headlamp Lock has done this conversion. Evidently there are elec...

Re: Headlight R + R

... sealed beam H5001. I am wondering if these are an American market lamp Gary, yes these are the US market integral bulbs, where the reflector and lens are hermetically sealed and the filament is inside. These were required in the US until 1984, when composite lights were first allowed - separate...

Re: Removing and remounting the "528i" metal letters on the trunk

The emblem has studs that press fit into flexible grommets in holes in the trunk lid. You can pry it off, but you need to work evenly around the perimeter. I use a plastic pry tool and fulcrum it against a microfiber cloth to ensure I don't mar the paint. You'll quickly find the locations of the stu...

Re: e28 power seats?

The e34 seat foam is molded to humans, unlike the virtually flat e12 so that was a surprising difference. Pity they don't fit directly into my '79 chassis, but apparently the 80+. The E34 comfort seat was shared with the E32 and also had heating available. Once you crack into the E32 option list, y...

Re: 1980 528i “Lucky Find” Project

Your car is missing foam sound insulation which would prevent metal-to-metal contact. I'm not sure it's normal for there to be contact, though, even without the insulation. It could be that the mounting bracket is bent causing the rubbing edge of the airbox to ride too high. When you take it all apa...

Re: 1980 528i “Lucky Find” Project

How long since this has been started? Here are some pointers from Dr. Siegal. https://www.hagerty.com/media/maintenance-and-tech/dont-cold-start-a-long-dead-car/ In your second photo, think the snorkel just came off the airbox and the ignition wires spread into the gap. I can't quite make out what's...

Re: Valve clearance gap?

I use a ZDDP additive and Valvoline VR1, which is high in zinc and phosphorous. The VR1 product sheet specifically says it's not for use in cars with catalytic converters. But the story is a little more complicated than that. Cats have been on US cars since 1975, and before the early 2000's, all oil...

Re: C-pillar Vent Rehab

For posterity - unfortunately the adhesive pinstripe method didn't stand the test of time. The extreme bends required at the ends of the vanes were a problem for the metallic stripe, which crumpled and admitted water behind it, leading to a loss of adhesion. I resorted to using a dense foam roller a...

Mike, did the car use the E28 e-brake console, or was the switch block mounted somewhere else?

Re: e28 power seats?

This thread might be helpful. If you can find an E28 wiring diagram, that will show you the basic layout. From there it's just plumbing, but using OEM harnesses will certainly make life a little easier. I think that the E28 e-brake console where the switches live will physically fit in an E12, but I...

Re: Aux Fan Bearing Lube

All of the external wiring of the aux fan checked out okay. Fan was drawing under 22 amps. But removing the wire from the underside of the number 17 fuse showed how toasty things got below deck: https://i.ibb.co/VBYR7CP/Melty.jpg I was surprised that both of the red/green wires heading to the Stage ...
