Thanks Ron - I will check the centrifugal action of the distributor weights/springs and grease as needed. Will also bypass the thermal vacuum valve to the distributor (the one next to the coolant temp sensor) for testing to see if it's stuck. I seem to recall a FAQ mentioning what the two vacuum lin...

Yes, the problem is definitely only when cold, in the first few minutes so hard to troubleshoot because I have to wait until it's cold again to replicate. But it doesn't idle any higher when it's cold ( idle is usually anywhere between 700-1300 depending which 'mood' the car is in) so something is w...

Thanks Mike, will do. Timing was set by the book recently, but I haven't tested the advance/retard diaphragms to see if they hold vacuum, or affect the timing in any way. I'll check them out. I'll also check that vacuum temperature valve in between the distributor and manifold. It's hard to test fix...

No power until I rev it
Hey all, as title says I have no power in the first few minutes or until I rev the engine a bit after starting cold. Engine is in tune - valves done, timing set, vacuum hoses all checked. It starts fine, idles fine, runs fine rest of the time, but I notice it doesn't idle any higher when cold than w...

There are (at least) two types of coils - resistor and non-resistor. Ours are resistor, because the coil is actually designed to run at 9v. They only bypass this and 'overdrive' the coil to 12v when cranking to ensure a powerful spark. But you're not supposed to bypass the resistor all the time, oth...

The rear subframe from an e28 does bolt in, the anti-roll bar is positioned differently and needs mounts welded, and you need the entire e28 handbrake cable. Also you lose the twin-piston rears for the e28's single-piston. But you get a more common diff with cheaper LSD options but you'll need an ea...

I have always been terrible with paint, but at some point I was going to try and follow this article; http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/ask-mike-phillips-your-detailing-questions/25304-secret-removing-oxidation-restoring-show-car-finish-antique-single-stage-paints.html My paint is metallic but I b...

I don't know if you have other plans or just don't care, but you do realize that there is no speedo drive on the later trans, right? Anyway, as Chris said, balance isn't affected with a different flywheel. The added weight of the dual mass flywheel is a trade off for a more comfortable gear change....

Hey guys, reviving this thread because I have a similar question. I'm going to put in a Getrag 260 from an e34 535i into my e12 528i. I also have the dual mass flywheel which is in serviceable condition. The problem is on my bathroom scales the e34 flywheel alone weighs in at 30lbs exactly, whereas ...

Interesting proposal, it took a couple of reads to follow it. Yes and no, I think it would work if you source 12V to the relay separately, but not if you tried to just insert the relay in series. I'm thinking a diode might be needed too, but I can't quite say why, maybe not. But why not just replac...

My car came like this - it has a heavy-duty 'engine start' button in the dash in the blank space. The PO explained the exact same scenario to me, and his mechanic just bypassed it with the button. Due to this, yes the button will crank without the key in, but won't start. I don't mind it but it make...
