Re: Giubo
Thanks gents. My giubo hasn't failed yet but has several cracks that are converging. As I'm going to drop the exhaust and d/s to upgrade the shifter, now is the time. I'm planning on replacing the center bearing while I'm down there - is there anything else I should replace (other than nuts and bolt...

Re: Fuel pump psi?
The blue book says the 518i/520i also used a 5bar (71 psi) pump. The 3bar (43 psi) pump on the 528i / 530i has a delivery rate is 2.2 lpm / 4.6 gpm. It also lists the max power consumption as 6A. I have a fuel pressure gauge in the engine compartment and a new Bosch OEM fuel pump, and am measuring a...

Re: Shifter overhaul?
Welcome to the board, Hobbes. Don't disagree with anything Patina wrote here - all good stuff. I also bought the Auto Solutions short shifter and am planning to install that this winter. Ron is great to work with. Jon, did you manage to get your short shifter installed yet? I will remove the exhaust...

Re: AC ideas and suggestions
R12 is great. I do think replacing the condenser is a sensible move. Parallel flow condensers are far more efficient. I know you have the NOS condenser and that's a tempting morsel. And also, the fan mount brackets mount to the factory condenser which has a beefy frame. You'll need to engineer aroun...

Re: Supporting the Engine for Oil Pan Removal
Thank you Robert - FYI, you were one of the posters in 2001 saying that your father had replaced the oil pump from under the car. Jacking from underneath seems preferable.

Supporting the Engine for Oil Pan Removal
I have a leak which is either at the back of the oil pan or the main seal. Archives X from this board (2001) describe using 2x4s or a pipe across the shock towers to support the engine with chains so that the subframe can be lowered. In other Archives, there is discussion of lowering the subframe an...

Re: Question about Power Steering pump pressure
Yes, sir, that is exactly the thread I was reading. That linked article was very helpful. It looks like the pressure control valve would be circulating more fluid back to the inlet with the 130 bar pump than with a 100 bar pump. That _could_ have a negative effect, or maybe the pump wouldn't work as...

Question about Power Steering pump pressure
I was reading some threads on mye28 about power steering feel. It seems that a lot of effort has been spent by folks trying to tweak their cars with mixed results. The one constant appears to introducing some overpressure. I have a ZF power steering pump from an E23 rated at 130 bar. The E12 pump is...

Re: Battery Isolators
I found an adaptor kit on Amazon for fitting an SAE standard battery into a car having Japanese pencil post (JIS) leads, which have a smaller diameter. That essentially served to elevate and offset the post on the Interstate battery. Then I used an adaptor sleeve to convert the pencil post back to S...

Re: Battery Isolators
That's the rear strut brace I've seen that was sold by Top End Performance - NLA. The battery isolator sold by McMaster-Carr is a Battery Doctor model 20108, which is available elsewhere for less than McMaster-Carr, but you can't fault McMaster on their lightning-fast shipping. My problem is that th...

Battery Isolators
After reading about Derek's lock controller melting down, I started investigating battery cutout switches. I had a situation recently where a wire connecting a thermal breaker for the aux fan circuit disintegrated, broke and then contacted ground. It was alarming and a reminder of two things: 1) bat...

Re: Door lock actuator motor
Lock upgraded his central locking system in his '79 to a modern one with a key fob. I don't know the details/components, but he's a crafty guy.
This is really something, and a reminder to install a battery cutout.
